Out of Time
really is brilliant. It's one of my two favourite episodes from s1. (The other is
Captain Jack Harkness
.)
And I think it's really striking how much better Jack deals with things once he knows what actually happened to him.
(I'm not much of a fan of Ianto, but his role definitely becomes larger lateron, yes.)
