Write Every Day: Day #2

Here is the second day of Write Every Day in December. If you don't know what this is about, check yesterday's post. Nice to see both old and new participants joining this month in my journal!

*distributes virtual tea and biscuits to everyone* I hope everyone has as good a day of writing as possible!

Pretty frosty day outside - no snow, but a faint layer of frost covering the trees, the dead leaves on the ground, etc. I woke up unusually energetic today. I seem to have the concentration of a small rodent, so it's hard to stay still and write much though I have time, but at least I used my distractedness to clean up around here, which is useful. The dust was starting to make me cough a bit...

Today's writing

I managed a little over 600 words on my Yuletide story, yay. Much of what I wrote today feels kind of meandering, but I think I managed to introduce a bit more conflict, which the story was lacking. I might get there yet! I'm about to go visit a friend soon, so I don't know if I have time to continue later, but at least I got this much done.

How was today's writing for everyone else?

Too busy for proper writing time today, so just ~370 words on a drawer fic today to wind down. I have this huge monster of a series of drawer fics that all fit together in some way, all in one enormous document, written over the years for my eyes only, and I'm writing a few scenes or more, or new parts of it when I need to unwind or unstress, get something off my head, or just want to write for the pleasure of it and for having fun without paying attention to research or detail.

That series of drawer fics sounds like a good thing to have so you can turn to it when other writing doesn't flow, or you want to write without stress about what it will be like, etc. I also like periodically doing some writing for my eyes alone, though most of the time it's just random snippets or poetry. But sometimes it can come together to a more connected whole.

Yes, it works for me exactly in the way you're describing, plus also as keeping in the writing flow when I don't have any current project. I used to just have snippets or scraps here and there; I've always been writing small things since I was small. Then I discovered fanfic about ten years ago, but eventually lost my writing mojo completely after some unpleasant experiences in fandom. With a new fandom and new people the writing thankfully came back, including the important realisation that I need to write for myself first, not for others. My "drawer monster" helps me better than anything to always keep that in mind, and it grew into a kind of parallel universe in my head. *g* By now it's got over 404,000 words.

I hear you about needing to keep in mind that you're writing for yourself first, not for others. Though I do want to tell stories, which needs an audience, but I also enjoy it for my own sake even if everything doesn't ever see the light of day.

Sorry to hear you had unpleasant experiences in your previous fandom. I've had some unpleasant experiences in the past, too, though the reason I didn't do fanfic for years was because I was focused on my original stuff. But I think I became a bit too disciplined and was losing the fun and wasn't trying out enough new and different things. That's one of the things I want to fix by returning to fanfic - and I just can't resist Doctor Who inspiration. :-D A nice and supportive fandom is very helpful for the writing!
