Dear Hurt/Comfort Exchange writer
Dear Hurt/Comfort exchange writer,
Thank you so much for writing for me! I’m a total sucker for hurt/comfort fics, so when I learned there’s an exchange specifically for them, I had to sign up. Now, I picked enough freeform tags that they should already give you plenty of prompts and ideas, and if you go from one or more of them and avoid my DNWs, you should be very well off. But here’s more information and some fandom-specific prompts in case it’s useful for you! I apologise this is very long and rambling, especially with all the freeform tags from the sign-up included. Don’t be put off by it or think I’m especially demanding. It was taking so much time to just get any thoughts into words that I didn’t manage to make it concise as well! If anything feels like too much pressure, just ignore it. You can always just go along with the relationships and something from the freeform tags; this letter is just to provide extra information and specific prompts if you feel you need them, espeically since in all fandoms I’ve selected several possible relationships.
First, about my hurt/comfort feelings in general. I read it for comfort and to get to see characters I love struggle and then get help and comfort from someone they care about who cares about them. I want the comfort to be the main focus, rather than only the hurt. That doesn’t mean you need to shy away from dark and difficult stuff, though (heeding my DNWs). It’s okay to make the hurt be properly hurtful, and I can enjoy a good wallow in angst or pain, as long as things turn out all right in the end. And as long as the comforter truly is someone the character can trust and someone who cares about them. I’m not too keen on the ”comforter causing the hurt” scenarios unless it’s through accident, misunderstanding, miscommunication, unwanted byproduct of a necessary choice (you know, having to take a risk in order to save the planet/rescue someone in worse danger/etc.). ”Inadvertent hurt caused, needing to convince the other that they matter” scenarios are lovely. I just need the relationships I requested to be ultimately good and safe for the hurt character.
Here’s the details and DNWs that I wrote in my sign-up:
Generally, I like: Emotional hurt and comfort, emphasis on the comfort, happy endings or mixed endings with enough good to make you feel better rather than worse by it. Comfort for physical hurts like injuries (not too gory) or illnesses such as cold, flu, other things that cause fever. Stomach troubles are all right as long as you’re not too specific about things that come out. Characters caring about one another and supporting one another. Many kinds of emotional and physical comfort, especially the comforty things listed in the tags. Characters who don't easily ask for/receive comfort or show hurt getting comfort. More details and fandom-specific prompts in the letter!
For all these character combinations I’m equally happy for either or both of the characters being hurt; for Nyssa & Tegan both being hurt is also good, although I didn’t have room in the tags for that. Though for Two & Jamie & Victoria I'd prefer the focus to be on Victoria as the tag says. The loss of family/loved one tags are with Victoria, Nyssa or Tegan and their canon losses in mind.
Do Not Want (DNW):
- rape/non-con, dub-con, a character having to endure painful sex or any kind of sex they don’t really want
- gore, graphic violence (the sort that would merit an Explicit rating), graphic descriptions of torture
- Incest
- Anyone under 16 in sexual activity
- Non-canonical character death. (The family loss / loss of loved one tags only refer to losses that characters have suffered in canon, e.g. Victoria losing her father, Nyssa losing her father and her people, Tegan losing her aunt)
- All hurt and no comfort, or mostly hurt and only a little comfort.
- The comforter purposefully/knowingly hurting or having hurt the one in need of comfort. I’m fine with the usual ways in which people sometimes hurt each other, through misunderstandings, fear of abandonment, not understanding what the other needs; or tough situations in adventures in which something must be risked to save everyone. But I need the comforter to genuinely care about the hurt person and be someone they can trust.
- Suicidal tendencies or suicide attempts, or bodily self-harm.
- A/B/O, mpreg
- Different-universe AUs (e.g. Coffee Shop, High School/College, Werewolves, Western etc.). I prefer the canon universe. I’m fine with canon divergence (what if) AUs.
- Unhappy endings.
- PWP/porn. I’m fine with explicit sexual content, but I don’t want that to be all the story is about or the only form of comfort. I’d suggest leaving out any specific kinks, except for things that fall under the requested tags like tenderness.
I like missing scenes, pre-canon, post-canon, adventures, romance, fluff, angst, domestic moments, exploring new worlds and times and places, exploring nature or space, food, warm drinks (I’m very much into tea), sweet treats (mmm chocolate and cakes and biscuits), animals. I like cuddling/comforting someone to sleep, platonic hugs and kisses, non-platonic hugs and kisses, all kinds of cuddles and snuggles and clinging, declarations of affection/love, not managing to outright declare affection/love but showing it in other ways, characters trying to be stoic or tough while actually needing comfort, and the other(s) helping or coaxing the character to express their emotions, admit hurt, or accept comfort. I also like situations where both characters are hurt and are mutually comforting each other, either at the same time or first one and then the other.
If I’ve only requested gen for particular characters, please request that and don’t make it shippy. The only exception is Ten & Martha & Jack — if you write that and want to make it a shippy threesome instead, I’d like that as well. I didn’t remember to also nominate the shippy version with the ”all hurt”. (In addition, I’m fine with the Two & Jamie & Victoria relationship having a bit of Two/Jamie or Jamie/Victoria on the side, as long as that’s not the only focus and you don’t make it a threesome.) If the character(s) are in other relationship in canon, including those relationships is fine. But I’m always happy to receive genfic even when I’ve requested a shipfic, as long as you don’t make a canon couple break up.
If you write sex for shippy pairings, you can be as detailed as you like, but I’d prefer things to stay pretty vanilla. This is just not the genre where I’m going to want lengthy BDSM scenarios or anything you might warn people about. If you write sex and want to know more about my likes: I enjoy things being done with the hands and mouths, exploration of each other’s bodies, tenderness, joyful sex, characters discovering sex or discovering new things they can enjoy, characters taking their time. In cases where one or more of the characters are non-human (reptilian-type alien, AI in a body, sentient spaceship, Time Lord, what have you), it’s totally okay to involve characteristics natural to them even if they’re not normal to humans, so that’s not the sort of kink I’d like you to avoid. That is, if Rosemary is into sex involving Sissix’s tail, or if a Time Lord’s respiratory bypass makes the Doctor really good at blowjobs, go for it.
Now the requests!

Optional tags: Common Cold, Cooking, Downplaying an Injury, Enduring Pain to Protect Another, Hurt Character Clinging to Comforter, Misunderstandings, Mutual Pining, Near Death Experience Makes Unaffected Character Realize They Love the Victim, Sex To Prove Character Is Fully Recovered, Trapped, Wilderness Survival
Note: ”both hurt” is always an option as well, though I didn’t have room to select/nominate it for each combination. Though with Doctor & Jamie & Victoria I would like a focus on Victoria, because she does go through a lot and I feel she needs some extra comfort!
Second Doctor and Jamie (gen or shippy)
I love all of the Second Doctor era companions, so feel free to include any of them as supporting/background characters.
prompts:
- Jamie hurting emotionally from / being traumatized by events at Culloden and being comforted (possibly after a lot of coaxing)
- Either or both of them emotionally hurt by something that happens during an adventure, such as someone dying or being hurt, not managing to save everyone, making a mistake, seeing people treated unfairly and not being able to help, being scared by something
- Season 6B stuff; fix-it for the ending of War Games
- Jamie feeling hurt by the Doctor lashing out at him in temper for some blunder, the Doctor having to make amends
- Jamie feeling sad by having let the Doctor down
- Jamie feeling left out when the Doctor doesn’t need him for something, or orders him to do some seemingly less important task, or worrying the Doctor appreciates someone else more
- Accidents while fixing the TARDIS
- Either being in love with the other and being sad because they think it can’t be, while actually it can
- Either of them being hurt during an adventure, or one being afraid for the life of the other / worrying they have died, but everything turns out all right
- Being worried together about another companion who’s in danger
Second Doctor & Jamie & Victoria
Comforting Victoria for her father’s death, or when she’s scared or made sad by something that happens during their adventures, or when some dangerous situation she or the others are in traumatizes her and she can’t get over it. I really like Victoria and the fact that she’s allowed to be sensitive and sometimes scared and hurt, although she can also be plucky and courageous at other times. I’d like to see the Doctor and Jamie try to help her adjust and support her when they’re both a lot more foolhardy and likely to run towards a danger rather than away from it. It’s fine if she comforts them for something as well!
Tegan and Nyssa (gen or shippy)
I love having two female characters who travelled together for so long, and were clearly different personalities but were friends and made a good team. I’m very happy shipping them — the combination of their personalities works great for me, they’re hot and lovely, and hey, shared bedroom! — but I also am happy with gen and friendship. I’d rather not have them in other ships in the background in a genfic, but you’re welcome to include the Doctor or other companions as characters. I particularly love Nyssa, because she’s a smart science princess and she’s quiet and headstrong and allowed to be important without being extraverted and outgoing. But I also like Tegan a lot, in particular in combination with Nyssa, because their different strengths balance out each other. As Castrovalva showed, they team up and get things done when they need to, even when they’re totally confused.
- They both go through a lot of bad stuff during their adventures. I could see either one or both of them needing comfort, for reasons including but not limited to:
- Nyssa’s loss of her father and her people and her planet, and what the Master’s done
- Tegan’s aunt being shrunk and killed, and her being whisked away from all that’s familiar
- Any tragic or scary things that happen to either or both of them during their adventures (including adventures we haven’t seen on screen)
- Adric’s fate
- Tegan’s frustration with the Doctor not being able to take her home
- Nyssa always wants to help people, but it’s not always possible
Feel free to also come up with anything else that fits my tags! Also, some kind of fix-it for Terminus, for example Tegan staying with Nyssa as well, or Nyssa being able to rejoin them sooner than she does in the Big Finish verse (I haven’t listened to the relevant Big Finish audios yet, so please no fic based on them!). I haven’t yet seen all of the TV episodes where Tegan and Nyssa are together, but I expect I will have by the reveals.

For combinations of Jack and Martha or Ten, Jack & Martha:
I would especially love post-Year That Never Was hurt/comfort, and I specifically want it to explore the hurts of them all. The TV episodes give us plenty of the Doctor’s hurt, but Jack and Martha go through a lot, not to mention they’ve been treated not so great by the Doctor himself. I would love to read something that explores all these different facets of their lives and hurts and relationships and gets them stronger through it.
If you don’t want to write post-YTNW stuff, also other reasons for these characters to get together; Martha’s visit to Torchwood during Torchwood S2; helping Jack recover from the events of S2 finale; both Martha and Jack (and possibly the Doctor) needing some time after everything that happens in Journey’s End. Or something much further along the line, later than any of the adventures we’ve seen them in, or reminiscing about the past when they’re older. Or an unseen adventure where the Doctor takes them at some point.
Nine/Jack
Nine has a lot of survivor’s guilt and angst, and the version of Jack he travels with is younger, more cheerful and devil-may-care than the later versions; it’s a very interesting combination, especially as the Doctor doesn’t trust Jack much at first. It can be very interesting seeing Jack somehow figure out how to comfort this Doctor, or make him admit to being hurt or to accept comfort. It can be something big like the guilt over the Time War or not being able to save someone in an adventure; or it can be something more every day, like mishaps with the TARDIS.
More prompts:
- Maybe the Doctor is injured during an adventure and trying to be stoic about it.
- Maybe Time Lords do sometimes get the common cold.
- Maybe the Doctor misses someone from his past.
- Or maybe he’s just tired, overworked perhaps, probably won't admit it.
I like Rose well enough, so please no Rose-bashing. She can be present or not in the story, however you like.
Thirteen and Yaz or Thirteen and Team
I’d love for Thirteen to comfort Yaz, because Thirteen’s so lovely the way she’s really into being around people and with her companions and tries to make small talk and converse but regularly fails, and she clearly adores Yaz and they’re BFFs in space, so she’d be shattered if anything hurt Yaz, and want to make everything better, but not necessarily know how. Yaz has a tendency to be the quiet, dependable one, and I suspect she’d have a hard time accepting comfort or even showing hurt, so this could lead to all sorts of interesting scenarios.
But also Thirteen needing comfort, either from Yaz or all (or some) of her team, would be lovely, again because she so earnestly tries to connect with people and do things right, but doesn’t always do things like humans do. She’d probably be very awkward about needing comfort, and try to be up and about as soon as possible; but at the same time, she’s more likely to listen to reason and open up to her friends than most other Doctors we’ve seen. So this could also lead to all sorts of lovely scenarios.
Here are a few prompts:
- Thirteen or Yaz being hurt during an adventure, and needing to accept help rather than just soldier on
- The Doctor being separated from her TARDIS temporarily, and fretting about it or missing her
- The Doctor feeling devastated because she accidentally got her friends (or one of them) into danger
- The Doctor feeling devastated because she made a mistake or couldn’t save everyone
- Accidents while fixing the TARDIS
- Comforting Yaz after the events of Demons in the Punjab
- Comforting Yaz about the memories of her school bully that come up in The Witchfinders
- The Doctor missing someone she used to travel with, the team helping/comforting her
- Comforting the Doctor after the Daleks (well, one) showed up again in The Resolution
- Anything leading to biscuits and tea!
- The hurt/comfort situation leading to the Doctor and Yaz getting together. E.g. comfort cuddles leading to something more, or verbally reassuring the other leads to more confessions.
- The Doctor or Yaz being in love with the other and being convinced it can’t be, and a happy resolution of that situation.

I’m fairly new to this fandom, only having finished the third book recently. So forgive me for having fewer things to say and little in the way of specific prompts — doesn’t mean I don’t want it as much! I love all the hurt/comfort scenes where Ship, Seivarden and others are trying to comfort Breq who is trying not to need it but doesn’t succeed and eventually has to accept it and feels better for it but awkward. I can’t get enough of that and I want more. I also love Seivarden being a hot mess who needs help getting things together. I’d love more of any of those kinds of things, either during or after canon, whichever characters and relationships you’ve volunteered to write.
I have a fondness for a Seivarden/Breq/Mercy of Kalr three-way relationship however you choose the interpret it. But I also like combinations of just two of them or gen versions that stick to the friendship and found family and other things they can be to each other. But I love the feeling that they love each other deeply and particularly in their own ways, although it’s different for each, and Seivarden doesn’t mind that Breq can’t have the sexual side of things — or even the romantic in quite that way — but there’s still an intense belonging together and caring between them that goes beyond companionship and friendship. Also, all the hugs! And I love that there is such a special bond between the ship and its captain, and that Breq needs convincing Ship can feel it with her although she also is a Ship; and that all these can coexist in some sort of happy three-way something, where each gives and gets different things and has their place in the whole.
When Ship is involved, I’d love some attention to the Ship’s specific ways of providing comfort, like showing how everyone’s doing, taking care of the people aboard it. Or Ship watching its loved ones sleep/rest.
I’d love post-series stories, possibly exploring things happening in the Provisionary Republic of Two Systems, or other further adventures, or just daily life aboard the Ship, or exploring and amending past pains and losses of the characters. But missing scenes, other points of view or alternate versions of events during the books are also good.

I love this series and its characters, and it’s one big comfort read for me. These are characters and relationships I particularly care for especially in the hurt/comfort sense. Here are some more detailed prompts, but feel free to pick up something completely different, or just run away with one or more of the tags I selected.
Prompts:
- Ashby, Sissix or Rosemary (or more than one of them) having to take some time to recover from the events of Hedra Ka. Sometimes trauma and hurt can creep up on you later, when the worst danger has passed; or perhaps even years later something else happens which brings all that to mind.
- Sissix helping Rosemary deal with the pains related to her past and her family.
- Sissix seems very level and grounded, but what kind of things hurt her and make her need comfort? It could be something bad involving her hatch or feather family, not getting enough touching, or maybe Corbin just gets on her nerves again, or maybe she’s somewhere cold and Rosemary needs to warm her up so she can move.
- Any time Ashby feels he’s made a mistake as a Captain or let someone down would seem ripe material for comfort needs, considering the ideals of Exodans and his need to do everything as right and fair as possible.
- One of the great things about Sissix is the fresh perspective she brings, because she doesn’t have the same hang-ups about feelings and relationships that humans do, so she may be able to bring unique comfort to either Rosemary or Ashby. On the other hand, the cultural differences can also create conflicts and more need for comfort.
- Sweet loving comfort sex between Rosemary and Sissix.
- I love love love that Sissix is so tactile and open with physical affection, and I love that Rosemary propositions to her because she wants to help Sissix with that. I’d totally love things where they just cuddle and pet and snuggle for comfort, and Rosemary tries to make up for the lack of touching Sissix otherwise has without other Aandrisks.
- Pepper and Sidra have both gone through a lot of hard stuff, and surely need help and comfort. They also both understand what it’s like to need a new start and have to build your life from the beginning and figure out how to deal with stuff, so they’re well predisposed to help one another. But they also have ample opportunity for conflict and misunderstandings, as we see in the book. Any more of that is nice, whether it’s just Pepper getting Sidra some interesting-tasting food to cheer her up, or something more complicated. How would Sidra cheer up Pepper? How does Pepper feel about Sidra’s animal bodies?
- Owl comforting Pepper either during her juvenile years in the junkyard, or after Pepper gets her back. She’s had a lot of pain pile up from losing Owl even though she’s been able to start her own life. And painful knots in her relationships with Blue or Sidra might always create needs for comfort. How does Owl comfort her? Does it change from Pepper’s childhood to her adult years?
- Cultural misunderstandings between different species
Thank you so much for writing for me! I’m a total sucker for hurt/comfort fics, so when I learned there’s an exchange specifically for them, I had to sign up.
