Torchwood fic (Jack/Ianto): Taste of Spice

I finally got around to posting my [community profile] torchwood_fest fic on AO3, so let me share it here as well.

Taste of Spice (2782 words) by AuroraCloud
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Torchwood
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jack Harkness/Ianto Jones
Characters: Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones
Additional Tags: Season/Series 01, Angst, cakes, POV Ianto Jones, Angst with a Happy Ending
Summary: On a dark December evening, Ianto Jones isn't feeling exactly cheerful, and his relationship with Jack is just confusing. Still, there can be unexpected benefits to spicy cakes.

My third Jack/Ianto fic, and my third Torchwood-only fic (ie. not Doctor Who crossover), and also the one I am the happiest with to date. Late Series 1 Jack/Ianto is interesting to explore, because their relationship is, as I see it, still in a very complicated no-man's-land, they've got issues, and it's wonderful to try to work out all that and figure how it might go and how they might react to this or that. And generally, more I write these two, the more I enjoy exploring them. Also, dear [personal profile] shopfront did a wonderful job beta-reading this story for me.

This fic is getting really well received on the archive so far; I'm not used to this many hits, kudos and comments in under 24 hours, not with my fic. Nice!

Fests, fics, and fandoms

Hello, hello! I've had new friends arrive recently from the Yuletide friending meme, hi, new friends! And hi, old ones, because I've been a bit random about posting. I try to become more frequent again. Today's post is just about recent fanfic fests and fics I've received and written. Which reminds me, I finally managed to finish my Chocolate Box letter the other day, so if anyone wants to take a look, here it is!

Fandoms are Doctor Who, Torchwood, Wayfarers, Parasol Protectorate, and Finishing School. Lots of prompts for various relationships! There probably are more fandoms I could have requested, but considering how long the letter turned out, it's no doubt good I didn't. And I was trying to be brief. Ish.

Anyway, [community profile] fandom_stocking went live this week, and I got many lovely gifts in mine. I got several lovely fics, of the Doctor Who and Torchwood kind; by [personal profile] trobadora, [personal profile] navaan, as well as [personal profile] marginalia, [personal profile] missanotherboat, [personal profile] firefly124 and [personal profile] angelus2hot. Do check them out! Also, I got three ballet icons by [personal profile] kate, suitable for a beginner dancer like myself as I had hoped, so now I have some appropriate icons for rambling about my ballet classes; also, book recs from [personal profile] cornerofmadness (a considerable bunch of LGBT themed sf/f recs!) and [personal profile] dunderklumpen; as well as fan art and greetings.

I managed three fics myself; naturally not all that I wanted to write, but still, three. And I'm learning how to make stories comparatively short, ie. around 1,000 words. Here are the stories I wrote.

for [personal profile] nenya_kanadka:
A Spray of Water Falling on a Wave (909 words) by AuroraCloud
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Doctor Who (2005)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Heather (Doctor Who: The Pilot)/Bill Potts
Characters: Bill Potts, Heather (Doctor Who: The Pilot)
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Canon Lesbian Relationship, Canon Lesbian Character, Post-Episode: s10e12 The Doctor Falls, Fandom Stocking 2017
Summary: A moment in the life and space travels of Bill Potts and Heather, after.

(I was so happy to get around to writing my first Bill fic! I hope there are more to come!)

Then this, for [personal profile] trobadora:
A Lady Is Always Ready (907 words) by AuroraCloud
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Doctor Who (2005)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Thirteenth Doctor/Missy
Characters: Thirteenth Doctor, Missy (Doctor Who)
Additional Tags: Post-Episode: 2017 Xmas Twice Upon A Time
Summary: It was embarrassing to lose her TARDIS for such a long time. It was even more embarrassing that when she found the TARDIS again, Missy was standing outside.

(Waah, I can't resist writing Thirteen/Missy, and we've only had two words from Thirteen in canon!)

And finally, for [personal profile] chamilet:

Through the Dark (1167 words) by AuroraCloud
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Torchwood
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jack Harkness/Ianto Jones
Characters: Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones
Additional Tags: Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Post-Year That Never Was, Nightmares, Fandom Stocking 2017, Touching
Summary: Though that year never was, it comes back to haunt Jack. It's a good thing he isn't alone this night.

I also posted another Jack/Ianto fic recently, but it's not up on AO3 yet. It was for [community profile] torchwood_fest; the prompts were winter and Christmas themed, and while I don't usually work with Christmas or other holiday themed prompts (winter, for sure, I am a Finn after all) this story came to me and I was rather happy with myself for managing something not terribly fluffy out of the prompt "holiday treats". When the fest closes, I'll put it up on AO3 as well, but for now, here have the link to the journal posts:

Taste of Spice by AuroraCloud: Dreamwidth post / Livejournal post
Summary: On a dark December evening, Ianto Jones is hardly in a festive mood, and his relationship with Jack is just confusing. Still, there can be unexpected benefits to spicy cakes.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness/Ianto Jones
Word Count: 2790
Rating: Teen
Genre: Angst, Romance
Notes: Takes place late-ish in S1; after They Keep Killing Suzie but before Out Of Time

I was quite happy the way this turned out, personally. The fest was originally supposed to end last weekend, but it was extended, so we'll see if I have time to edit the other Torchwood fic lying on my computer. I hope so, the world needs more Tosh femslash...

On a final fannish note, I started watching Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries tonight, and I think I'm in love. With the series and especially with Miss Fisher.

Dear Chocolatier

Dear Chocolatier,

Sorry I only got this letter up now! Hope it helps. You’re super-awesome for offering whatever you’ve offered out of my requests, and I look forward to reading what you come up with. I’m offering some prompts for each relationship, because I’m a writer who enjoys having something like that to work with. If you prefer to work without specific prompts, just skip them and check out my general likes and DNWs. Or if a prompt/idea/like leads you to another idea that I didn’t mention, feel free to go along with it as long as you avoid the DNWs. Feel free to combine relationships and prompts.

General likes )

General dislikes and Do Not Wants )

Doctor Who (2005) (relationships requested: Bill/Heather, Bill/Martha, Bill/Amy, Jack/Doctor (any Doctorfrom 9 to 13), Jack/Martha, Jack/Eleven/TARDIS, Eleven & Amy & Rory) )

Torchwood (Jack/Ianto, Tosh & Ianto, Jack & Tosh) )

Wayfarers Series - Becky Chambers (Rosemary/Sissix, Sidra & Tak, Sidra/Tak) )

Finishing School - Gail Carriger (any relationships in the tagset) )

Parasol Protectorate — Gail Carriger (Genevieve/Alexia or Genevieve&Alexia, Biffy/Lyall, Genevieve/Imogene, Alexia & Akeldama )

Dear Public Call Writer

Dear Public Call writer,

Here I’ve got a letter with the relationship and character specific prompts and details, because I didn’t want to make the details box in the sign-up super-long, and also because I wasn’t quite finished with this part by the sign-up deadline. Note on Sunday 22nd October: I've added at least something to the unfinished parts now, so consider this finished. I don't want to keep you having to check back in here!

How much I go on about each relationship doesn’t determine how much I want it; I’ll be really happy with any of these. And the prompts and such are just meant to help you get started or get ideas, you can ignore me and write something else!

Fics! By me.

[community profile] rarepairfest reveals have happened, so I can share my fic! But I've forgotten to share the previous fics I've been able to post before this one, for [community profile] wintercompanion and [community profile] torchwood_fest, so I will take this opportunity to post links to all of them. All links lead to stories on AO3.

First, here is the Rare Pair Fest fic. The prompt basically allowed me to write the "Martha and Jack seeking comfort from each other after the Year That Never Was" fic that I've been wanting to write for a long time. Still, it wouldn't have been nearly as good without [livejournal.com profile] enkanowen's beta work, which helped a lot both with the language/writing and with the pacing and character development.

Care for Apocalypse Survivors (5797 words) by AuroraCloud
Chapters: 1/1<
Fandom: Torchwood, Doctor Who (2005)
Rating: Teen And Up Audience
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jack Harkness/Martha Jones
Characters: Jack Harkness, Martha Jones
Additional Tags: Hurt/Comfort, Angst, Post-Year That Never Was, Pre-Season/Series 02, Episode: s03e13 Last of the Time Lords, brief appearance by Tenth Doctor, background Jack Harkness/Ianto Jones - Freeform, Mentions of Torchwood Three
Summary: After the Year That Never Was, the TARDIS whisks the Doctor, Martha, and Jack to a safe place to rest and recover. With a year of horrors behind them, Martha and Jack have each other for comfort.

For Torchwood Fest, I wrote my first posted Jack/Ianto fic (I've got a lot of unfinished drafts on my hard drive, most of them darker and angstier than this one). Though the prompt I wrote for was about sex, I tried to make sure the fic had more than just that. Again, much thanks to Enk for helping make the story better.

Fresh Air (2386 words) by AuroraCloud
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Torchwood
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jack Harkness/Ianto Jones
Characters: Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones
Additional Tags: Fluff, Semi-Public Sex, Morning Sex, Cuddling & Snuggling, Ianto thinking about his feelings
Summary: In a morning after a vigorous night in his flat, Ianto opens the window for some fresh air. He is not taking Jack Harkness properly into account, though.

And for Winter Companions, I wrote a Jack/Ten story. It has a lot of elements that have been brewing in my head for a long time. I didn't feel I quite got it where I wanted, but it has some things I like, nevertheless. It seems Ten isn't that easy for me to write, regardless of how much I've been watching and reading him, but I do want to practice more on him - especially with Jack.

Between (4928 words) by AuroraCloud
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Doctor Who (2005), Torchwood
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Tenth Doctor/Jack Harkness
Characters: Tenth Doctor, Jack Harkness
Additional Tags: background Jack Harkness/Ianto Jones - Freeform, Post-Episode: s03e13 Last of the Time Lords, Sex in a TARDIS
Summary: It was a moment when Jack didn't want to hear the TARDIS materializing behind him.
The Doctor comes across Jack in the middle of an alien-hunt, and they work out some issues. In various manners.

Dear Femslash Exchange Writer (finished!)

Dear Femslash Exchange Writer,

I’m excited that you’ve offered to write at least one of these relationships with these female characters, so don’t worry too much, I’ll be happy to see what your muse will offer you. I list some Do Not Wants below, but other than that, feel free to do whatever your muse wants to do! The other things in this letter are just meant to help you along if you want a bit more from me. And I finally finished this. Sorry it took so long!

Things I particularly like: hurt/comfort, love growing out of friendship, enemies finding common ground and connection, character growth, women being awesome together, women supporting each other. I like fluff, I like angst, I like banter, emotional stuff, adventure, humour, worldbuilding/exploring the world of the canon, missing scenes, pre-canon, post-canon, what-if/canon divergence AUs…

Do Not Want: rape/non-con, gore and graphic violence, underage relationships, incest, death of requested characters, break-up of requested characters, strong horror, modern/mundane/werewolf/vampire/etc. AUs (basically the kind that fundamentally alter the world). Also please no racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and other discrimination/hatred based on such attributes (hopefully not very likely for participants of this exchange, anyway!). Second person rarely works for me, so I’d suggest avoiding that.

I've written various ideas, prompts, suggestions, and what I love about the characters and their relationships, but that doesn't mean you have to include all or any of them. They're just meant to help spark your imagination if you need that.

Requests

Dear Rare Pair Fest Writer

Dear Rare Pair Fest writer,

Awesome, you’ve offered to write for one of these fandoms and pairings I’m really into! Can’t wait to see what you create! So don’t worry. I’m sure I’ll be thrilled with what I get.

NOW FINISHED UPDATING. SORRY IT TOOK FOREVER. Life just kind of happened and I was too exhausted to string many sensible sentences together. I'm not sure I'm still capable, but I'll do my best to write what I'm going to write here. So this should be the final state of this letter, unless I notice some typos and such I want to fix.

Fic likes: I love femslash, slash, het, and am fine with various polyamorous scenarios for any of these relationships. I love hurt/comfort, adventures, daily life moments and domesticity, angst (but hopefully with a happy/comforting ending), fluff, porn (though preferably so that the sex tells something about the characters), first times, established relationships, kisses, space, history, loyalty, found family, characters coming to accept some previously neglected/repressed part of themselves, canon divergence AUs (various ”what if”s changing some event or element of the canon but still keeping the world basically the same) etc. etc. Really a lot of things, so feel free to let your imagination roam as long as you respect my Do Not Wants / dislikes.

Many of these characters come equipped with teams, friends etc. and I’m very fine with these making an appearance in the story, should it work out for the story. There can be no sex or a little sex or lots of sex, however you like. Any rating from General to really really Explicit is fine.

Do Not Wants/Dislikes: graphic violence, gore and torture, non-con, sexual abuse, character bashing, mpreg, wildly different AUs of the coffee shop / high school / werewolf etc. variety. It depends a bit on the canon how much violence/torture/abuse I can deal with, but generally, please not higher level than the canon. That basically means that in Torchwood I can deal with worse stuff than others, because it comes with the canon. Also, no abuse/rape/consent issues between the requested characters or their canon significant other. Please no 2nd person POV, and in fic 1st person doesn’t work often either unless it’s in diary/epistolary format.

Now onto the pairings and requests. My request in italics and any additions in regular font. If I'm not adding much to the actual request, doesn't mean I care less about that pairing, just that I actually managed to say what I wanted before the sign-ups closed.

Wayfarers (Becky Chambers) - Rosemary/Sissix )

Parasol Protectorate - Genevieve Lefoux / Alexia Tarabotti  )

These books have been one of my favourite fun-and-fluffy-yet-smart with strong women and LGBT rep books for the past years. I love that unlike most steampunk I can find, it's not incredibly violent and depressing, yet manages to be more subversive and rebellious than looks on the surface. Alexia and Madame Lefoux are among the most delightful characters in the books (okay, I do adore Biffy and Lyall and Akeldama like any sensible person would) and some of my favourite sf/f ladies. I love that while Alexia is all sorts of kick-ass, she still is a woman of her era and confined by many of the standards of the Victorian ages, because let's face it, we all are affected by the mores of the society we grow up in. And I would absolutely love to see Geneviève make her defy those standards even more than she does. There's this undercurrent of attraction Alexia feels towards her, and the very obvious attraction she feels towards Alexia, and while Alexia and Lord Maccon are my favourite of Gail's het pairings (ie. the only one I do like), I still ship these two more. Feel free to either ignore Lord Maccon, have Alexia break up with him, have him never have entered her life, or have them enjoy a happy open relationship - everything is fine and nothing more preferable than the other.

I haven't yet read Romancing the Inventor, though it's on my to-order list, so might be I will before the stories go live. I'm fine with setting this story any time during the Parasol Protectorate books or after them. One possibility is also setting it during The Custard Protocol or after Imprudence - how would an older Alexia and Geneviève romance after everything else they've been through?

Torchwood - Jack Harkness / Martha Jones )

The Count of Monte Cristo - Euǵenie Danglars / Louise d'Armilly )

Doctor Who / Torchwood - Tenth Doctor / Ianto Jones )

Fests! Fic fests!

Whee! The Summer/Winter Holidays fest at [livejournal.com profile] wintercompanion is open and looking for sign-ups until the 28th of May! So if you're interested in writing some Doctor/Jack fic based on prompts or creating Doctor/Jack art, head over there! I signed up right away - heck, finding that community is probably the reason I ended up back on LJ in the first place, so sure as hell I'm participating. Maybe it'll make me successfully finish a story again!

And even if you don't want to participate, in July the fic and art will be posted in the community, so keep an eye on it! They've got both LiveJournal and Dreamwidth versions now, so neither site needs to miss out.

Another fest I'm planning to participate in is [livejournal.com profile] torchwood_fest, which is nicely low-pressure and has a lot of prompts. I'd love to finally write a whole Torchwood fic after starting many that aren't finished.

Fics and space

I don't seem to get around to actually writing posts these days. Well, let me post just a few random important things.

Finishing Torchwood S2 was certainly bad for my overall productivity. I mean, now there's so much more fanfic I can read. And do you have any idea how much fanfic there is in that fandom, including well-written and thought-out stuff, with interesting plots and delicious smut, and how much of it's is bloody epic in length? I could spend the rest of the year doing nothing but reading fics. I'm trying not to.

Well, I am still succeeding at reading Things That Are Actual Books, still, and one of the books I'm currently reading is Chris Hadfield's An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth. In the case you don't know, he's a Canadian astronaut who has, oh, been Commander of the International Space Station and recorded a version of David Bowie's Space Oddity in space, and so forth, and the book is his memoirs of how to become an astronaut and how to be one and what we all can learn from it and how awesome space is and stuff. I'm having a grand time reading it.

I possibly had other things to write, but I can't recall them. Well, let me record that I had a good writing day today.

Exit Wounds

Finished watching Torchwood S2 tonight. Oh, I just have to go around falling in love with stories that break my heart, don't I? It's no good for me, why do I have to do it?

I knew certain things were going to happen, but doesn't make it hurt any less, damn it.

Proper commentary some other time.

Fandom Stocking!

It's been such a busy week I haven't even had time to make a Fandom Stocking post! But oh, my stocking was lovely - Doctor Who and Torchwood ficlets, Torchwood icons and astronomy/space icons (I need to make room for them, ie. just buy the user pic add-on already), book recs, general greetings with lovely graphics, and even new friends! It was so much fun! Even with my terribly few fandoms, I got many lovely gifts.

Here are the fics and ficlets I got:

[livejournal.com profile] navaan wrote me a lovely little Martha & Rose fic: Good Old Rose. I was so happy someone picked up that prompt I'd had in Public Call, and this was exactly the kind of thing I'd been hoping to read! Girls being awesome and liking each other - there's not enough fic of that kind, and I so much wanted to see a positive connection between Martha and Rose!

[livejournal.com profile] cornerofmadness wrote a nice Torchwood ficlet with a Jack/Ianto moment during an adventure Bryn Celli Ddu

[livejournal.com profile] cookielaura also wrote me a Jack/Ianto fic: Other Benefits If you read it, and have been paying any attention to my journal, I'm sure you'll know why it meant I had to instantly friend her. *g*

And hm, I don't know how to link to Dreamwidth accounts in the same way as to LJ accounts in the paragraphs above, so here are just links to the stories:

A sweet little Torchwood team Drabble by fififolle

and a hilarious Jack/Ianto ficlet by xmassocks where Jack gets innuendo even out of shoe polishing, and Ianto has plenty of sass.

As for other things, I got two lovely Torchwood icons, one Jack and one Jack/Ianto from tarlanx

And leesa_perrie made several lovely astronomy/space icons!

Several comments in the stocking also give me interesting book recs, especially scifi and historical fiction!

I'm glad I did this fest, it was great!

As for what I wrote; I had plenty of ideas and a few things I started, but I didn't end up able to write or finish nearly everything I wanted to. However, I did finish and post these two:

The Return of the Nightingale, for [livejournal.com profile] navaan
Fandoms: Doctor Who (2005), Torchwood
Characters: Jack Harkness, Martha Jones
Relationships: Jack Harkness/Martha Jones
Additional Tags: Hurt/Comfort
Warnings: none
Rating: Teen
Words: 2591
Summary: Martha returns to the Hub sooner than Jack would expect. They find solace in each other's company, talk about Doctor, and explore what else they might share.

Reward, for [livejournal.com profile] trobadora
Fandom: Doctor Who (2005)
Characters: Ninth Doctor, Jack Harkness
Relationships: Ninth Doctor/Jack Harkness
Warnings: none
Rating: Teen
Words: 984
Summary: Jack has done well. Will the Doctor acknowledge it?

Maybe one of these days I'll start posting my fics in my journal, too, but there are the links to the stories on AO3.

2016 fandom meme

Because I'm supposed to be editing Fandom_Stocking fic, here, have instead a fandom meme via various people. Though it's for 2016, most of the stuff I mention isn't something that actually came out in 2016, since much of my fannish existence was watching Doctor Who and Torchwood DVDs from years and years ago. And also when book-reading, I only occasionally read stuff from the current year.

Your main fandom of the year?

Doctor Who / Torchwood. There were a few months in the early half of the year when I was more occupied with something else, but most of the time, my obsession with the Whoniverse was what kept me sane (well, for a given definition of sane).

Your favourite film watched this year?

I didn't watch many, so I guess I'll go with Ghostbusters. It was fun and feel-good, there were women being awesome and being friends and hunting ghosts together, and for once men were totally secondary, and there was Holtzmann. I'm not pretending it was an unprecedented cinematic artwork, but I had lots of fun.

Your favourite book read this year?

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. An instant favourite, and the first book in ages that I reread within the same month of reading it for the first time (that was partly because it was my Yuletide assignment, but I also adored reading it again). Also, its stand-alone, A Closed and Common Orbit, as well as Catherynne M. Valente's Radiance (a wonderfully weird, imaginative and gorgeously written steampunk AU space opera scifi mystery etc.). Radiance was probably objectively the best, most mind-blowing book I read in the year, and I need to reread it to appreciate it even more. But the Becky Chambers books were sanity-saving at a time when much needed, and ticked most of my fannish boxes and some I didn't yet know existed.

Torchwood S1 thoughts

So, I've been meaning to write my main thoughts about Torchwood S1 for quite long already, but it got a bit long and I had trouble focusing to finish it. So by now I've also rewatched Doctor Who S3 (writing up my thoughts on the last few episodes might take a while, too) and started Torchwood S2. But I'll keep those separate from this post. Most of these thoughts were written before I started watching S2, so I'm just focusing on S1 now. Spoilers ahead, obviously. Kind of long.

Out of Time.

I just watched "Out of Time" ie. Torchwood S1 episode 10. And I just want to say: oh, Jack. I wanted to hug him and I kind of cried. And I also kind of want to write fic.

It so much broke my heart in Doctor Who S3, when Jack returned, how long he'd been abandoned without knowing what happened to him and why, and how hard it clearly was for him. He was a lot darker and more bitter than before, and for a good reason. Now, watching Torchwood S1, it's been obvious in a lot of episodes that it's been eating away on him, all of it, what happened and the long time that has passed and learning to live with everything without understanding why, and just the fact that nobody's meant to live with all that, and it has all sorts of effects on him. But this episode showed more clearly than any before just how damn lost he feels. Poor Jack. Want to hug him. Love that he still keeps going, with all that.

It was maybe the best episode so far, I thought, really well-written and powerful all around. And I liked that it was the first totally non-gory one. I like Torchwood despite the unevenness of the writing, but it is generally too gory for my tastes. I have all kinds of thoughts about the series that I want to write - many of which I did write but they need updating and finishing before I feel I can post them - but anyway, I love the characters and the premise, even if the execution varies. I'm not as obsessed with it as with Doctor Who, but it has a pull of its own.

Though one problem nearly all of these episodes have: there's too little Ianto. Hopefully that'll change eventually?
