The way I see it, editing counts as writing even if you end up deleting words, because it's still working on the story, and usually needed. Also, you probably write some new words while doing it regardless of where the word count goes. But yeah, I usually end up adding to the word count while editing, too - even though I'm usually trying to cut it down!
