auroracloud: gold-toned star decoration in a Christmas tree (Christmas / star)
To everyone: merry Christmas, happy holidays, or just nice last Friday of December, whichever feels the best for you! This year has been a long, difficult one, but I hope we all can find some hope and comfort, whether in connection to the midwinter holidays or something else.

I am well, and well-fed, and things are peaceful here.

Also, it's Yuletide! I got a lovely This Is How You Lose the Time War story as my gift fic. I'm also very pleased that I didn't default the challenge, despite December having been a mad scramble for me scheduling-wise (I'm not great at time management). I'm even fairly pleased with my story.

But anyway, here's my gift fic! I love love love how the author has fleshed out the human story behind a few lines of a letter in the book; it's like the other side of the broad birds-eye view of time and life that our beloved rival time agents have. It complements the canon wonderfully.

Dear Yuletide writer,

Thank you for offering to write whichever of these rare fandoms we matched on! Sorry it took me a while to get the full letter up. I’m also sorry it’s anything but concise – that’s not why it took me so long to finish - rather, it’s the case that when I got myself organized enough to write this, I wrote a lot.

First, I’m into a lot of different kinds of stories, so relax and don’t fret too much. I don’t have a huge load of DNWs and I enjoy seeing different ways people interpret the same source material, the different possible stories they come up with. I’m often a multi-shipper – doesn’t mean I like every ship, but I’m not jealously guarding an OTP in most cases – and I genuinely like gen as much as I like shippy stuff. Given how found family heavy some of these fandoms are, maybe that’s not too difficult to believe!

But I’ll give you a bit about some of the things I like, and some more thoughts and prompts for each fandom, in case that kind of thing helps you. However, if you aren’t the kind of writer who works better with prompts; if these restrict you rather than inspire you; then don’t pay attention them. Seriously! I want you to write what inspires you. Often I don’t even know what I’ll enjoy reading before I read it, and the most enjoyable stories are usually ones that the writer was passionate about writing. But if these extra ramblings, lists and ideas help you pick a direction or a starting point, here, make use of them.

If you need an emergency fandom because the one we matched on doesn't work for you after all, I'd say The Beacon and This Is How You Lose the Time War would be the easiest to pick up on a short time-frame. I've described them a bit from that perspective after the request part. I'd guess We Fix Space Junk wouldn't be that hard either - while there are three seasons, they're 8 episodes each and the episodes aren't that long.

The Requests

Here are the requests, with the details I wrote in the sign-up plus whatever additional things I have to add in the letter. The request part is in italics, and whatever additional stuff I rambled now is in a normal font. Sorry some of the DNWs part keeps being repeated, but there are also fandom-specific differences.

Yuletide reveals were yesterday, so here are the fics I wrote. Yes, fics in plural - this year I succeeded at writing two short treats for Yuletide Madness as well.

For my assignment, I had The Wayfarers again, but this time with a request that finally allowed me to write a Rosemary/Sissix sex scene that takes joy in the interspecies aspect of it. Also I had a really chocoholic phase when I wrote it, in case you can't tell. Luckily it seems to have worked, based on the comments.

Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Food, Alien/Human Relationships, Chocolate, Sex, Explicit Sexual Content, Frottage, Hands, Tails, Female Characters, Alien Character(s), Alien Biology, Canon Lesbian Relationship, Touching
Summary: The Wayfarer is in space again. Sissix needs touching. Dr. Chef has made a new dessert based on an old Human recipe. Rosemary is happy to test its supposedly aphrodisiac effects with Sissix afterwards.

Yes, I like putting in lots of tags. (Also, let's not speak of the fact that I altered the title several times and accidentally typo'ed this title as "Excellent Desert" without noticing it until several hours after the reveals. *facepalm* Luckily I did notice it and fixed it. There is quite a difference between the words dessert and desert.)

Both of the Madness fics I wrote were entries into new fandoms for me, hurray! Which is very understandable in both cases as they're very new fandoms. In one I even wrote the first fic for the fandom, which is rather exciting.

An Evening in the Garden (698 words) by AuroraCloud (for [personal profile] st_aurafina / [archiveofourown.org profile] st_aurafina)
Fandom: Moonbase Theta Out (Podcast)

Characters: Roger Bragado-Fischer, Alexandre Bragado-Fischer
Additional Tags: Pre-Canon, Fluff, Established Relationship, Gardens & Gardening, Dogs
Summary: Alexandre has been working on his garden. Roger brings him hot chocolate.

Yes, this is the first fic in the fandom! It's thanks to [personal profile] st_aurafina's enthusiastic recommendation of Moonbase Theta, Out, that I discovered this lovely queer sci-fi podcast drama, and when I read her request I really wanted to write something. Several of the prompts were enticing and I would have loved to write for any of them, but I ended up choosing the one where I could include dogs. And also make Roger and Alex happy because they deserve it. (I did my best to not make it obvious that I know little about gardening and have trouble keeping plants alive. I love the idea of gardening very much, however!)

And I wrote my first fic for This Is How You Lose the Time War! It was bound to happen sooner or later, I am so in love with this book. This story pretty much wrote itself when I just gave myself some time at the keyboard, and I've had lovely feedback for it, especially considering how small the fandom. I've even seen it recced twice! (Also, I got to write a dog again!)

auroracloud: a foreign planet setting, with a large moon on the sky, with the text "...and step into a different world" (science fiction)
I've read enough Yuletide fics, at least, to start making recs. I'm going to try to do a few rec posts, grouped by the type of source material. I've been reading the most in various science fiction books fandoms so far, so I'm starting with some of those. I haven't yet read all of the fic in all these fandoms, but at least enough to have a nice collection of recs. There's so much incredibly good fic in the archive for these!

There may be spoilers in summaries and tags, not to mention the fics themselves, so best not click on anything where you haven't read all of canon (hint: for Machineries of Empire this includes Glass Cannon).

Machineries of Empire - Yoon Ha Lee (2 fics) )
Imperial Radch - Ann Leckie (2 fics) )

A Memory Called Empire - Arkady Martine (2 fics) )

This is How You Lose the Time War - Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone (1 fic) )

Murderbot Diaries - Martha Wells (1 fic) )

ETA: Also, in this previous post I shared my excellent gift fics, for the Imperial Radch and Machineries of Empire series! If you're into those fandoms, remember to check them out as well if you didn't already.
auroracloud: (Yuletide / moonscape)
Yuletide has been live for a few days now, and I'm very pleased with my Yuletide. I got not one but two fabulous gift fics this year! I'm ever so pleased with them. I feel so privileged. Here, let me share both of them with you. There are also lots of other brilliant fics in the archive, most of which I haven't had time to read yet (especially since I'm suddenly reading Penumbra Podcast post-S1 fics, help me) but I'll try to write rec posts soon!

The main gift I received is for the Imperial Radch books, post-canon, a lovely Seivarden-centric fic where Seivarden has angst and Ship takes care of her and helps Breq take care of her, and there are lots of cameos from other crew members, and it's so true and emotional and good.

Still Left in Want of Mercy (3403 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Imperial Radch Series - Ann Leckie
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Mercy of Kalr&Seivarden&Breq
Characters: Seivarden Vendaai, Justice of Toren One Esk Nineteen | Breq, Mercy of Kalr (Imperial Radch)
Additional Tags: The rating is because Seivarden is Seivarden and has no filter, Lots of other crew members show up in small roles, Post-Canon, POV First Person, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Slice of Life, Tea, Artificial Intelligence, Helpful AI, Spaceship AI - Freeform
Summary: The Republic of Two Systems is about a month old. Seivarden is having yet another crisis - can Mercy of Kalr get her through it? Maybe, with the crew's and Fleet Captain's help.

I also got a treat, for Machineries of Empire, a Cheris & Jedao crackfic post-canon, where they go and try to have therapy, and it goes as well as you might imagine. It's a hilarious fic where the comedy comes from things that are mostly extremely plausible with regards to canon, and I loved it. Just the kind of thing I hoped for when I said I might enjoy crackfic in this fandom.

At the same time, Cheris said, "Eleven years."

The therapist's smile became even more polished. Cheris could practically see her filing them under avoidant man, codependent woman, check.

Thank you to UrsulaKohl and sigalit for beta reading this.

Btw, nothing to do with the above fic, but copying the information into the journal post reminds me again.... The AO3 character and relationship tags for this fandom are so weird. Why do they use everyone's birth names when it's clear in canon that when they join a faction, the faction name is their name (in place of family name)? And for the vast majority of characters, we get to know them by their faction names, and for most of them I wouldn't remember the birth names at all if they weren't in all the AO3 tags, because otherwise we see them maybe once. With Cheris a case can be made for her birth name, because that also ends up being used a lot, but otherwise... Don't really know who I should complain to, though. It's just so weird and it feels different from how things are usually done.

I mean, it's not like in the Anna Karenina tag, Anna Karenina gets called by whatever her birth name is just because we can discover it from somewhere in canon (it's been years since I read the book so I don't remember if her maiden name is explicitly mentioned, but her brother is a character in the book, so it's not exactly hard to figure it out). She's Anna Karenina. It should be the name the character is mostly known by / introduced to the readers as, shouldn't it? And for the Machineries characters, that's usually the faction name + personal name. Shuos Jedao, Kel Khiruev, etc. (And bizarrely, Kujen seems to be tagged only as Kujen even though we know his name is Nirai Kujen. It feels like whoever decides the canonical tags has decided the faction names are like titles, such as Mr. or Captain or something, but they're not, it's clear from the books that they occupy the same function as family names. Okay, end of digression.)

Dear Yuletide Writer

Thank you so much for writing for me! I'm super into all these fandoms and characters, and there isn't enough fic about any of them, whether the number of existing fics is 1 or 150 or whatever. So I'm sure I'll be pleased with whatever you write for me. I like a whole load of things and genres and stuff, so feel free to go wild. I'm providing some prompts and things-I-like in this letter and the sign-up, but these are just to help spark your imagination, if you are a writer who works better with prompts and details. You absolutely don't need to stick to writing about something I've explicitly mentioned.

(Note early on Nov. 4th: I may edit this slightly later in the day, as I edited some sign-up details and don't have the time to finish editing the letter now. But it's nothing major, just some phrasings and prompts and such - the fandoms, characters and the DNWs are valid as is.)

I like gen, f/f, m/m, m/f and other things. I like many genres and tropes, for example adventures, mysteries, romance, smut, domestic/slice of life, fluff, angst (with a happy or sort-of-happy ending because otherwise my feelings get too down, but it doesn't mean you have to make problems disappear), character studies, missing moments, past fic, future fic. I usually like either canon universe or fork-in-the-road/canon divergence AUs. If you want to write crossovers with two (or more!) of these fandoms, or with one of these fandoms and another fandom you know I like, feel free to do so.

Mostly I've discovered/read these books only fairly recently (save for the Wayfarers series) so if I say something dumb because my brain is having a useless moment, just ignore it.

I'm okay with fairly dark stuff depending on how present those themes are in canon. Ie. you can go darker with Machineries of Empire than with other things. I'm okay with stories dealing with mental health issues, especially ones that are present in canon as well, but please tag for them so I know when I start reading. I have some mental health issues myself, and while sometimes reading about characters dealing (or not dealing) with theirs is helpful, it's good to know that's coming up. And I'd prefer not getting super deep into suicidal/self-harm stuff even if it's canon. Warn for anything that requires warning, but generally, stuff that the canon deals with is also okay in fic, as long as we know.

And here be the requests! It's mostly just the same stuff as in my sign-up, but for some fandoms I have additional notes. Also, the Machineries of Empire part includes some post-Glass Cannon prompts after the sign-up part, so if you haven't read Glass Cannon, skip that.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] _profiterole_ for looking it over again from the canon perspective, and I happily got a language/SPAG beta from the beta spreadsheet very promptly despite finishing my edits rather later than I expected. I still need to go and respond to all the lovely, lovely comments I've gotten to the fic so far!

Also, this is the first time ever I've managed to have a title before I started writing the story. I felt like that was worthy of mentioning, because normally titles are so hard for me.

Yuletide main collection stories have been revealed, and I received a most wonderful gift, in form of a canon divergence story of Jane Austen's Emma, with Emma and Jane Fairfax becoming friends earlier in the timeline, and some changes to Jane's. It can be read as either gen or as f/f or pre-femslash, whichever interpretation works best for you (which makes it perfect for me as I adore both), and it's written in a delightful Austen-esque voice, and with everyone wonderfully in character!

I haven't yet read any other stories in the collection, but I'll be sure to read some today, there are stories in all kinds of lovely fandoms.

Also, my fic in [personal profile] navaan's Spicy Advent Calendar was revealed last night. It's Doctor Who, Martha Jones/Bill Potts, which I've wanted to write for ages. This is not the fic I spent weeks trying to get together, but the one that my muse gave me as soon as I gave up on that fic, and probably the one I should really have been writing all along. So if you've wanted to read a Martha/Bill fic with explicit sex, I've now provided one. Click here to read the calendar entry and get the link to my story!

Hello, dear Yuletide writer!

Fantastic, we share a fandom and characters! Great! I’ll be really happy for fic about any of these, as there simply isn’t enough. I try to provide lots of prompts and general likes and such in the hope that it helps you on with your writing, but you don’t need to feel any pressure to incorporate specific likes or use specific prompts. I’m always happy with either gen or shippy fic, and even if the request sounded like I’d prefer shippy, rest assured that gen is always wonderful and welcome, too. You can always modify or combine prompts, too, or take a shippy-sounding prompt and turn it gen or vice versa.

I’m listing my general likes, dislikes and DNWs, and then each request and some additional prompts and details for it. I first include the request as it was in the sign-up, and then provide some additional details. Except for the Count of Monte Cristo request, because it was already in a sort of a prompt list format, so I simply expanded it. (And included some gen prompts and ideas as well, because I realised after the sign-ups that I’d written the request with shippy assumptions.)

As long as you avoid my DNWs, feel free to create anything you like with these fandoms and characters, and I hope you will have fun writing!

Happy happy New Year to everyone! I hope 2018 turns out to be good for us all! I had a nice time spending New Year with friends, and intend to be very lazy and enjoy myself today.

Yuletide reveals have happened. This is what I wrote:

Words That Burn (3301 words) by AuroraCloud
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Le Comte de Monte-Cristo | Count of Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Eugénie Danglars/Louise d'Armilly
Characters: Eugénie Danglars (Le Comte de Monte-Cristo), Louise d'Armilly
Additional Tags: Yuletide 2017, Yuletide, Female Characters, 19th century lesbians, canon lesbian characters (more or less), Music, Women Writing, Historical, First Kiss, POV Female Character, Female-Centric, Misses Clause Challenge
Summary:

Eugénie Danglars and Louise d'Armilly find their way to each other through music and poetry.

I'd wanted to write something for these two characters for so long - a pretty damn much canon f/f pairing in one of my favourite 19th century books (seriously, the only thing that remains is for Dumas to say straight out they're a couple, it's implied quite heavily enough). The prompt had many lovely directions I could have gone, but this story suggested itself to me almost at once, and I really enjoyed writing it. Many thanks to [personal profile] shopfront for beta-reading it despite not knowing the fandom in advance. I do think this story can be read even without knowing the book; there's so much we're not shown about the characters in the book, and I'm trying to fill the gaps here.

I didn't get around to writing any Treats, but there's always the NYR collection if I get around to any of the other prompts that sounded inspiring!

ETA: Here's a post-reveals Yuletide friending meme! I've joined it, a lengthy comment because that's what I do. I also added a few recs in the comment, but I might do a proper recs post in my journal once I've read all those fics I still really really want to read but didn't yet.
