My writing has been in a rather unfocused stage for long, or maybe "really many focuses" stage. I flit from one project to another, and partly it works, but if I didn't have a fair amount of short-ish fanfics (and ones with deadlines!) I don't know if I'd finish anything. I do hope to start properly working on a novel draft soonish so that I would be focusing on slightly fewer different stories. But on the other hand, it works for me to have different projects to work on, in different stages of progress. If I do too much of one thing alone, my creativity gets stale. So it's nice to have some things in the planning/brainstorming stage, some in the first draft stage, some editing... But the number of unfinished stories I've got is way too much. I said in the beginning of this year I'd try to finish more WIPs, but it hasn't worked out that well so far.
Yay for "alibi sentence" turning into 350 words! And good luck with your nonfiction project(s). It sounds interesting, at least! Heh, project with tentacles. :-)
