Very random Doctor Who S5 comments

I'm too tired to make a proper post, but I just wanted to say that I love the Eleventh Doctor. Love love love him.

And Amy. And Rory, too. Also, I want to make Amy's scarf from The Vampires of Venice, but that's going to be way beyond my knitting skills for quite a while yet, even if I actually start practicing like I've meant to. I mean, I haven't even got around to successfully knitting leg warmers yet. But maybe knitting a lace scarf would be easier? My craft skills are kind of weird like that, it might help as long as I only need to handle two needles. I can crochet lace things just fine, but I have a feeling that one's going to be better if you knit it.

Yeah, I'd like to say more about S5 than just start talking about knitting, but well, it's late.

But it's a pity that from what I know, Jack and Eleven never meet on screen, because it would be grand. And fun. And lots of cheekiness all around.

Yeah, I'd like to say more about S5 than just start talking about knitting, but well, it's late.
S5 & knitting are perfectly good things to write about.

But it's a pity that from what I know, Jack and Eleven never meet on screen, because it would be grand. And fun. And lots of cheekiness all around.

That sounds like a fun combination - I was definitely thinking of what would happen if they all met, while watching the Angels two-parter with River in it. The last thing I watched was The Vampires of Venice, though I'm sure I'll watch a few more today, so does your story have much spoilers beyond that episode? I'm sure I'll check it out sooner or later, though!

Yeah, he probably wouldn't do it himself, but he would think it's cool if someone else does - as long as they're going to put it aside to save the world. The usual, you know.

Okay, I'll read that story when I'm done with S5! It won't take that long to get there, I'm having so much fun watching this.

I could never figure out who I loved more ten or eleven so I say I love them equally. Loved Amy and Rory too and man, eleven meeting Jack would have been awesome. Also I adore River Song.

I'm still too early in to make a proper comparison between the two, but though I love Ten and he's all complex and fascinating and stuff, at the moment I'm enjoying how much fun Eleven is and how it feels like he's learned and grown up from whatever was eating him from the inside as Ten, and he's better about himself and other people, so far at least. In any case, the energy is wonderful. Jack and Eleven really should have met! I'm so going to have to write it. And yeah, River is a lot of fun! I look forward to seeing more of her.

This is my favourite explanation of the change from Ten to Eleven (a little bit tongue in cheek):

'So here's how I think of the transition from Ten to Eleven. In "The End of Time," when Ten dies, it is with one last big melodramatic, overwrought, overly emotional BANG (because that is how RTD rolls, and I think green_maia was 100% right when she says RTD wanted to write the Doctor's real death and couldn't).

And then he wakes up as Eleven - AND IT'S FINE. Better than fine, really. Sure, the TARDIS is crashing, but it's not like that hasn't happened before, and then he meets this awesome little Scottish girl, and really, things are fine. And the Doctor goes, "Holy crap on a cracker, I was mad. Let's not do that again!" '

That's a terrific way to sum it up. I'll get back to your longer Ten-related comments yet - I haven't had the brainpower recently - but even the first time watching the Specials, despite loving him tons I started to get all "OK, get over it and regenerate! You've clearly been you for too long and can't handle it anymore!" So while he was all "I don't want to go" I was "no, it's really time for you to go, sweetie". And now it's been a delight to watch Eleven grow away from all that and see that really, things are fine like this.

The life lesson? Either a) RTD likes big and dramatic and way overdoing things, or b) sometimes the change you resist is exactly the change you need. Actually, I guess it's both. :-D

I once described Ten as an unstable element which then 'decays' (or changes) into the very stable Eleven.

And don't get me wrong, I very much enjoyed watching Ten, but as you say it got very painful towards the end. He had to go, for his own sake.

I've spent a lot of time pondering Ten (and while I haven't published any fic with him yet, I've started loads), so it's fun to examine the differences between him and Eleven. :-)

There are definite differences in all the doctors which is really cool. To me Ten has more sadness to him than Eleven who is often more ebullient.

I watched S5 fairly recently and, to be honest, it took a while for Eleven to grow on me. But in the end, yes, he's totally awesome. :D

It took surprisingly little for me. The first couple of episodes he seemed distractingly young, but then I feel he's started to get the hang of how to give the impression of all that age and time behind him even as he looks young. And he has so much fun, and I enjoy how he and Amy (and Rory) work together. I've been watching a lot of Ten the past two years, since I rewatched almost everything after finishing his era, and no matter how I love him, I was quite ready to see a different take on the Doctor, and I really like how Eleven is so far.

I love Eleven too. Less keen on his companions (except Clara) though. I wish the rumours of the Doctor regenerating into the same face were true :'(

Also agree about Eleven/Jack, Jack should have been a full time companion because he's amazing.

I haven't seen any of Clara yet, so can't comment on her. I love Amy and Rory though - I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to hang out with Amy for long, we'd drive each other mad, but I enjoy watching her, and her interactions with Eleven are hilarious. But I can see how she's not everyone's cup of tea. I think she's exactly what Eleven needs at this point, though, to bring him as far away from the late Ten's doom and gloom as possible so that he can have fun adventuring again. :-) I'm having fun watching the different ways Eleven is developing away from Ten. I love Ten to bits, but his tragicness got a bit much in the end...

I so much wish for Jack as a full-time companion! It would be a riot. The way they introduced the character and the way he's been made an immortal and everything, it would make sense to use him more than they did. Maybe Chibnall will do it? He wrote lots for Torchwood. And it's not too late yet - sure, Barrowman's aged, but he's still a looker and they can just explain that by Jack having been around for a thousand years or something. :-)
