auroracloud: Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon and Zoe Heriot from Classic Doctor Who, smiling together (Two & Jamie & Zoe happy)
I decided to claim a prompt table over at [community profile] who_allsorts, and I've claimed the Second Doctor era (no specific characters or relationships, just the whole era, because I love so many of them!) with the following 12-prompt table on the theme "Education".

#01 – Biology #02 – History #03 – Drama #04 – Mathematics #05 – Music #06 – Language
#07 – Geography #08 – Chemistry #09 – Art #10 – Physics #11 – Technology #12 – Literature

There were so many lovely prompt tables, it was hard to choose! But I have lots of ideas for this one, at least. As I write the stories, I'll link to them here, though I'll also probably make a series in AO3.

[profile] femslashexchange reveals happened a few days ago, and I'm starting to get caught up with my comment replies (though not reading all that I mean to read from the collection). I may at some point do a general recs post, because there were some lovely fics written for this challenge. But as I haven't yet pointed out my lovely gift fics, I shall do that and then also share my own fic. I was fortunate enough to be gifted two lovely fics in the Original Work category, both by the talented [personal profile] shewhostaples.

Relationships: Original Female Character/Original Female Character, Regency Debutante/Her Sister's Governess
Characters: Original Female Character(s)
Additional Tags: Regency, Books, Gossip, Class Differences, Age Difference, Secret Identity, Reference to illness suffered by child
Summary: There was always a fire in the schoolroom grate, even when she came home long after midnight. And Miss Cole was always there. Sometimes she would be turning over the pages of a novel (Maria was almost sure it was a novel); sometimes writing a letter; sometimes she would be dozing in the high-backed chair that had been Mamma's favourite when they lived in the country; but she would always be there when Maria looked in.

And Maria always looked in.

Regency romance between two women, a debutante and her sister's governess! Using and subverting tropes and expectations! Novels and reader girls and secret authors! Written in a perfect regency romance style while telling not quite your standard regency romance! What's not to love? It's beautiful, do go and read it if you haven't already and have the slightest reason to believe you might enjoy such a story.

Summary: Leah Beecham is cast as Marguerite, and that's only the first surprise that the university Operatic Society production of Faust brings with it. And Ellie Everett should probably have kept out of OpSoc altogether if she wanted to avoid Music Department drama, but it's a bit late now, because she's got the part of Siebel...

Opera story from a modern student production with a lovely, gradually developing f/f story and lots of behind-the-scenes drama! And it's written with enough detail that you can follow it quite well even if you don't know the opera they're performing. Trust me on this - I haven't had the opportunity to see Faust in any format, so my knowledge of it is scattered, though I am familiar with the more famous songs and know the basic story. I rarely can follow operas based on recordings alone and I find DVDs and such unsatisfying, so I have a lot of gaps despite the fact that I love opera. For the longest time I didn't live anywhere where I could go to opera, so I have a lot of catching up to do, even if the Met Live / ROH Live screenings help somewhat (which reminds me, should get some tickets for this season).

Finally, here's my fic, which [livejournal.com profile] imagine_peace was kind enough to beta-read for me:

Shades of Fair and Dark (4758 words) by AuroraCloud
Fandom: Mansfield Park - Jane Austen

Characters: Mary Crawford, Fanny Price, Julia Bertram
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Female Characters, Female Relationships, Female Friendship, Music, Femslash, Femslash Exchange 2018, Kissing, Touching, Mentions of Edmund Bertram but no appearance by him
Summary: Years later, Fanny Bertram (née Price) meets Mary Crawford again. Much has changed, and things go differently than Fanny would have expected.

My first Austen fic ever! I've been reading and rereading all the Jane Austen novels since my late teens, but I've never written fic for one before - partly because I guess it took me a while to realize that writing femslash on Austen works was a perfectly legitimate and much-needed thing to do. I confess I felt slight "OMG what did I do?" at the first sight of the assignment, because when volunteering the fandom I had only considered the fact that I would love to write this pairing and not the fact that the last time I had read Mansfield Park was over four years ago, and I would have to reread it, and it is the slowest Austen work to read, being rather dense in style. But I'm really happy in the end that I got to work on this, because the reread itself was very rewarding, and so was the writing of the story.

Since Mansfield Park does have it issues (such as *coughEdmundcough*), rereading it from the point of view of "how will I use this to write Fanny/Mary" made some difficult parts of it easier to get through, and it made me focus particularly much attention on those characters and probably gave me viewpoints I hadn't had on my previous rereads. Not that I wouldn't always focus mostly on Fanny and Mary because they're easily the most developed characters in the story, and the ones I find the most interesting (especially as Mary's character kind of needs to be excavated from under the huge bias Fanny has). The request itself had lovely prompts to select from, but my muse was pretty clear from early on which one it most wanted to write. Writing the story was fascinating and I really enjoyed it, though it certainly wasn't one of the easiest fics to write. I'd love to go on and explore the story even further after the ending I wrote here, so maybe I'll return to it some day.

Now that I've gotten started on my Austen reread, I think it's time to go to reread all the other books. And femslash as many of them as I can!
auroracloud: Jamie McCrimmon (Doctor Who) (Jamie)
I finished and posted my first Classic Who fic, as an entry to the [community profile] who_contest drabble challenge on the theme "Pets". (In this case, "drabble" means 550 words or less.) I hadn't written anything for this community before, but when I noticed the current challenge, this little ficlet with Jamie and Victoria encountering odd things just leaped into my mind, and I wanted to write it.

auroracloud: vintage drawing of a woman and a lamppost against a text background (Twelve and clock face)
Hey, my [community profile] wintercompanion Summer Hols assignment fic has been posted at the community! It's Twelve/Jack, set pre-S10 for Twelve (and some-time-way-in-the-future for Jack). Only my second time writing Twelve (who just might possibly be my favourite New Who Doctor, at least since we haven't seen enough of Thirteen yet) and my first writing Twelve/Jack, it was exciting to do. I think I want to write more with them in the future. You can read the fic here (or the LJ crosspost here).
auroracloud: (Tardis in flight)
I'm a little late posting about the [community profile] turingfest reveals, which happened about 10 days ago, but here goes! It was a multi-fandom fest about AI/cyborg/robot/android/etc. characters. My gift was a lovely Doctor Who fic about the TARDIS and the Doctor, from TARDIS point of view (I love TARDIS POV fics! there need to be more of them!). It's lovely and beautiful, I love the flowy feeling of the narrative flowing in an out of various moments in time like the TARDIS consciousness would. Plus, there's a bit of implied Doctor/Jack, which is always lovely!

Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: The Doctor's TARDIS, Jack Harkness, The Doctor (Doctor Who)
Additional Tags: Fluff, 5 Things, Implied Relationships, Timeline What Timeline, wibbly wobbly timey wimey continuity
Summary: Five moments the Tardis shared with her Thief

Even if you've never read TARDIS POV before, or didn't know you might want to read it, this is a good one to start from, because it's not very long but still shows a lovely series of views on the Doctor & TARDIS relationship.

It's actually the only fic I've so far read from the fest, because it was the only one not mine that was written in my fandoms, but I do plan to take a look at the Original Work category, because I've come to adore AI/robot/etc. stories. But I didn't get around to it yet, because I promptly fell ill when the fics were revealed, and took a while before I could even leave a proper comment in my gift fic.

I also ended up writing Doctor Who, TARDIS POV fic, though my recipient and assigned writer weren't the same person (I wouldn't have been surprised if that had happened, it was an exchange of just a few dozen people, and I didn't know most of the other fandoms involved). It was my first time ever attempting TARDIS POV or any AI/sentient spaceship/etc. focused fic, but after a lot of editing I did end up fairly happy with the result, and the recipient seems to be happy with it as well, which is the most important thing!

And if anyone read it during the anon period who's familiar with my fics, they could probably spot it was mine miles away. Dealing with the Year That Never Was? Check. Ten, Jack, and Martha? Check. Jack's Fact-ness? Check. Jack and Ten's complicated relationship? Check. Jack and Martha connecting? Check. But I loved exploring the TARDIS POV to it all, and making her recovery the centre of the fic, not only her travellers. I should try to write more TARDIS-focused fic, I really enjoyed it.
auroracloud: (Twelve Bill 19th century)
I've been horrid at posting things and reacting to things lately, and I realized I haven't even posted about Chocolate Box fics, though it's been a month and a half. I've been very low on energy these past few months, and haven't even been much good at commenting on fics or replying to comments. I hope this gets better soon.

I only wrote one fic for Chocolate Box, but I was pretty happy with it.

Study Trips For Miss Potts (1333 words) by AuroraCloud

Additional Tags: BAMF Women, Time Travel, Season/Series 10
Summary: Bill appreciates the Doctor taking her to visit awesome women for her education and emancipation. Nardole provides tea and ineffective disapproval of secret escapades.

This was my first time writing (or at least publishing) the Twelfth Doctor; I think I finally started feeling comfortable enough with him to try my hand at him, as I've been watching S8 and S9 of Doctor Who. It was my second time writing Bill, and I completely, unabashedly adore writing her. I need to write more of her. Since her time on the show was cut woefully short, and she's so magnificent, we need more of her in form of fanfic. (Why are my absolute favourite Companions far too little on the show? Donna, Bill, Jack... Not to say I don't love the longer-term ones - especially I enjoy Amy, and absolutely adore Rory - but my favouritest-of-the-favourites never seem to stay for long enough.)

My gift fic was written by the wonderful and talented [personal profile] trobadora (which I had figured out by the first sentence or so), and it is exceedingly amazing. Seriously, this is one of the best Doctor/Jack fics I've ever read, and I've read a lot of them. Even if you don't particularly ship them, it's worth a read for an amazing exploration of the characters of the Tenth Doctor and Jack, and their peculiar relationships to each other, life, death, and time. I still need to write the multi-paragraph detailed comment this fic deserves; I only had the brain for generic gushing when the stories were revealed, and well, I still haven't had the brain for much more. Maybe now that I'm posting about it, I'll get around to it soon?

My third Jack/Ianto fic, and my third Torchwood-only fic (ie. not Doctor Who crossover), and also the one I am the happiest with to date. Late Series 1 Jack/Ianto is interesting to explore, because their relationship is, as I see it, still in a very complicated no-man's-land, they've got issues, and it's wonderful to try to work out all that and figure how it might go and how they might react to this or that. And generally, more I write these two, the more I enjoy exploring them. Also, dear [personal profile] shopfront did a wonderful job beta-reading this story for me.

This fic is getting really well received on the archive so far; I'm not used to this many hits, kudos and comments in under 24 hours, not with my fic. Nice!
auroracloud: vintage drawing of a woman and a lamppost against a text background (Default)
Hello, hello! I've had new friends arrive recently from the Yuletide friending meme, hi, new friends! And hi, old ones, because I've been a bit random about posting. I try to become more frequent again. Today's post is just about recent fanfic fests and fics I've received and written. Which reminds me, I finally managed to finish my Chocolate Box letter the other day, so if anyone wants to take a look, here it is!

Fandoms are Doctor Who, Torchwood, Wayfarers, Parasol Protectorate, and Finishing School. Lots of prompts for various relationships! There probably are more fandoms I could have requested, but considering how long the letter turned out, it's no doubt good I didn't. And I was trying to be brief. Ish.

Anyway, [community profile] fandom_stocking went live this week, and I got many lovely gifts in mine. I got several lovely fics, of the Doctor Who and Torchwood kind; by [personal profile] trobadora, [personal profile] navaan, as well as [personal profile] marginalia, [personal profile] missanotherboat, [personal profile] firefly124 and [personal profile] angelus2hot. Do check them out! Also, I got three ballet icons by [personal profile] kate, suitable for a beginner dancer like myself as I had hoped, so now I have some appropriate icons for rambling about my ballet classes; also, book recs from [personal profile] cornerofmadness (a considerable bunch of LGBT themed sf/f recs!) and [personal profile] dunderklumpen; as well as fan art and greetings.

I managed three fics myself; naturally not all that I wanted to write, but still, three. And I'm learning how to make stories comparatively short, ie. around 1,000 words. Here are the stories I wrote.

(Waah, I can't resist writing Thirteen/Missy, and we've only had two words from Thirteen in canon!)

And finally, for [personal profile] chamilet:

Through the Dark (1167 words) by AuroraCloud

Fandom: Torchwood

Relationships: Jack Harkness/Ianto Jones
Characters: Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones
Additional Tags: Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Post-Year That Never Was, Nightmares, Fandom Stocking 2017, Touching
Summary: Though that year never was, it comes back to haunt Jack. It's a good thing he isn't alone this night.

I also posted another Jack/Ianto fic recently, but it's not up on AO3 yet. It was for [community profile] torchwood_fest; the prompts were winter and Christmas themed, and while I don't usually work with Christmas or other holiday themed prompts (winter, for sure, I am a Finn after all) this story came to me and I was rather happy with myself for managing something not terribly fluffy out of the prompt "holiday treats". When the fest closes, I'll put it up on AO3 as well, but for now, here have the link to the journal posts:

Taste of Spice by AuroraCloud: Dreamwidth post / Livejournal post

I was quite happy the way this turned out, personally. The fest was originally supposed to end last weekend, but it was extended, so we'll see if I have time to edit the other Torchwood fic lying on my computer. I hope so, the world needs more Tosh femslash...

On a final fannish note, I started watching Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries tonight, and I think I'm in love. With the series and especially with Miss Fisher.
auroracloud: Bill Potts from Doctor Who (a young black woman) smiling excitedly (Bill smiling bow)
Happy happy New Year to everyone! I hope 2018 turns out to be good for us all! I had a nice time spending New Year with friends, and intend to be very lazy and enjoy myself today.

Yuletide reveals have happened. This is what I wrote:

Words That Burn (3301 words) by AuroraCloud

Summary:

Eugénie Danglars and Louise d'Armilly find their way to each other through music and poetry.

I'd wanted to write something for these two characters for so long - a pretty damn much canon f/f pairing in one of my favourite 19th century books (seriously, the only thing that remains is for Dumas to say straight out they're a couple, it's implied quite heavily enough). The prompt had many lovely directions I could have gone, but this story suggested itself to me almost at once, and I really enjoyed writing it. Many thanks to [personal profile] shopfront for beta-reading it despite not knowing the fandom in advance. I do think this story can be read even without knowing the book; there's so much we're not shown about the characters in the book, and I'm trying to fill the gaps here.

I didn't get around to writing any Treats, but there's always the NYR collection if I get around to any of the other prompts that sounded inspiring!

ETA: Here's a post-reveals Yuletide friending meme! I've joined it, a lengthy comment because that's what I do. I also added a few recs in the comment, but I might do a proper recs post in my journal once I've read all those fics I still really really want to read but didn't yet.
auroracloud: vintage drawing of a woman and a lamppost against a text background (Bill smiling colours)
Time of various exchanges and fests is upon us! I've successfully finished my Yuletide fic in time, though it still needs some editing (when have I not edited up to the reveals?), and I've taken a bit of a look at requests to consider treats. Though there are also so many other options for fic-writing in the near future! Such as [community profile] fandom_stocking, where the sign-ups ended last week. Here is my stocking if you want to take a look at it and maybe even drop something in there!

[community profile] public_call fics are in the process of being revealed. I wrote a Jack/Ten story, which has been posted: find the post with the link here.

And I got this lovely Bill/Heather fic from the exchange!

Bubblegum, Fire, Salt Water (1141 words) by florencedrunk

Also, more on the femslash front, due to my general posting fail I haven't posted links to all of my previous exchange fics either, so here's my [community profile] femslashex fic, a Thirteen/Missy fic I wrote for the dear [personal profile] trobadora and had ever so much fun writing.

Hope and Chocolate (2442 words) by AuroraCloud
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Doctor Who (2005)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Thirteenth Doctor/Missy
Characters: Thirteenth Doctor, Missy (Doctor Who)
Additional Tags: Fix-It of Sorts, Femslash, Femslash Exchange 2017, Crossing Timelines
Summary:

The Doctor goes back to find Missy during her time in the Vault. She has a plan. Also, there is a date.

I'm mostly caught up on Doctor Who now - I'm struggling in early S9 because I just don't like Clara enough and I don't like her and Twelve together (I love Twelve, but he works so much better with Bill!) and the writing has been getting steadily worse, and I don't think I'm finishing it before the Christmas special airs. But anyway, it means I've pretty much seen all the Missy episodes there are to see, and whatever I think of other things, Missy is freaking fantastic. I'm not even often fond of villains or quasi-villains or whatever she is, and I wasn't as into Simm!Master as much of the fandom seems to be, but Missy is my lady.

I really hope we will somehow get her and Thirteen together on the screen at some point.

What else? I basically binged through S1 of Broadchurch this weekend. Damn, it's so good. And the cast is fantastic, Olivia Colman and David Tennant are fantastic in the leads, I freaking love Jodie Whittaker's acting, and Arthur Darvill is at least as lovely in this as he was as Rory. And many others gave wonderful performances, too, and I just loved the writing, the way it focused so much on the characters and the community and the effect of the events on all that, not just solving the mystery.

I'll try to post more things some time soon. Like more thoughts about Doctor Who, and other things I've watched and read. I know I've been really quiet on the journalling side of things, but I'll be trying to fix that in the near future! I miss this.
