Write Every Day, June Day #15

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I'd worked on the travel writing assignment that I and a writer friend are doing together, typing up my diary entry about the nature outing and then editing it in the evening to make it more like travel writing. Well, I'd also sent the version that was typed almost verbatim from my diary, in the case the internet wouldn't work in the evening or I just wouldn't get it edited, and then I sent the edited version later. My friend read them both, and it turned out that she liked the first one a lot better! So I'd edited it worse, heh. (At least according to her taste. But she's read a lot of my writing by now, so I feel like she's got a pretty good eye for what works and doesn't work for my style.)

At least one of the reasons is probably that when I type, it's easy to ramble and write too much and overwrite things, because I type really fast. When I write by hand, I naturally rein myself in, because the writing is slower. The slowness also maybe makes me think more carefully about each sentence as I write it. But probably I also just corrected stuff that didn't need to be corrected. And of course, since the diary entry was written the next day, the impressions were fresher in my mind, and it seems I managed to capture the experience better though it wasn't chronological, more like thematic.

I need to take a while at some point to look at both texts and see what I was doing with each, because it might be useful for other things as well.

But hey, it's nice to know that apparently I can write pretty good-quality stuff in my diary!

Of course, this does make me wonder if I should attempt to write my novel draft by hand. It'd be slower, but it might be better? That is, if I manage to decipher it later...

Today's Writing

I've been sociable and out today more than usual, and as a result I've been pretty tired. But I did continue a bit on the fic I started last night, and I also started another fic for that bingo, this one in a beloved fandom I haven't written in a while. So let's hope I get this one finished and posted, it'd be nice to create more for that fandom again.

Then I felt inspired to continue writing this original short story that I wrote about two sentences of last week (I think). I ended up adding about 300 words to it (and since it's in Finnish, that's probably comparable to about 400 words in English, or something like it). I probably continued it from a different POV than I'd started it from, but those two sentences weren't very clear about it, and I felt like being in the other character's head. I rarely get around to writing original short stories, so it'd be fun if I managed to continue this one and make a full story of it. We'll see!

BTW, these check-in posts don't crosspost at LJ anymore because the post got too large. I'm too tired to arrange a way around it right now, especially since nobody's been checking in there this month so far.

I fiddled with Swap—fucker still won't get to the next place I need it; I thought I would only need a paragraph or two of transition a few paragraphs ago—and I need a title for the ML/BatB I've been poking at.

also I watched the newest canon and accidentally a new fic. I'm 3.5K in, which is checking in for the 15th and 16th both (it's certainly a better check-in for the 15th than the above comment), and when I paused at 1.9K I thought it was going to be 5Kish but now I'm wondering if it won't be nearer 8K.

[well done host, and ty for the tea and choc offered on yesterday's post. i've had a better day today, fought through the art block, wrote 1.1k, had a nice day at work - the kind of day where i feel i can see a bit of difference made. wish i could be less self-centric and say the art doesn't matter but... success on the creativity front fuelled my good mood at work so it all helps ]

You're welcome, and thank you. (I'd gladly send over real tea and chocolate, but I doubt the tea would keep.) Glad you had a better day and were able to write more, too. And it's definitely good for the mental health to be able to feel that one's work makes a difference. But I don't think it's self-centric if art and creating matters to you - art and creativity are important, even if they don't directly serve a purpose, and I think it's totally allowed to care about your art. I know mine makes a big difference to my well-being, and it's all right. ♥

Your day sounds very productive and full of interesting interactions of various sorts! :-) I'm glad you had a good day of writing, and I'm curious to hear what you notice about your two versions of the travel writing based on your friend's comments.

We had to spend the day at the cottage, me doing the interior cleaning and T. working on the outdoors stuff, but before we left, I added 1075 words to the H50 story.

I got 2542 done today on the Marvel bang. A lot of it may have to go eventually but I enjoyed getting it written.

I am also thinking about signing up for a romance Big Bang and maybe getting a writing partner for that one!

Wow, that's a lot of writing! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the writing of it - that's the most important part, anyway. :-)

I've never signed up for a Big Bang or co-written anything, I confess! But good luck to you if you decide to do one or both of those, and hope you have fun!

Just a quick check-in again to report 173 new words and the usual editing of the JFP (joint fic project). Yesterday's been very productive, as far as gardening and house maintenance stuff goes, but with my lingering bronchitis I was so exhausted afterwards that I fell asleep on the sofa, and that was that. *g*

Your counsel is very true, and I'm really bad at this, no matter that I always tell it to other people myself. *g* I'm still not getting enough sleep most of the time - although by now because I have to get up unusually early for a catsitting job, but I wanted the morning shift because the evenings are so horribly hot when you have to putter around in a totally overheated, unaired house - but other than that, I'm well again.

Writing on linklists and several of the "three topics" responses I've gotten. Which is enough, given the other things that got done yesterday.
