Write Every Day, Day #12

Today I played around with my Dreamwidth user pics for a while, including changing my default icon, and for the first time in... over 1.5 years, I think... my default icon here doesn't look like Nyssa of Traken, so I feel very disoriented when I look at my Dreamwidth page and keep looking for "me". But I'd wanted a change for a while, we'll see if I stick with this one. (On LJ I don't have most of these icons, so it has no effect there.)

Today's Writing

Mentioning my Ambush Project in yesterday's post had its uses, as I ended up working on it today! Some handwritten pages, no idea of the word count or such. But it was nice to work on it for some time again.

In the evening I typed up the pages from one of the times recently when I worked on my novel with longhand writing rather than at the computer. It ended up being over 500 words, which is considerably more than I've recently managed at the computer, so maybe I need to do this handwriting thing more often with the novel as well. I also edited some while I was writing, and added some new things. There are still bits that have got a little comment attached to them that say "come up with something for this part," "finally come up with a surname for these people" etc. But I'm pretty pleased overall with what I did.

No, I didn't, I don't have much of a skill with graphics, so all my icons are made by other people. This one is from roxicons where there are lots of lovely icons, though there haven't been any new ones for years. Found it back when I was still more active on LJ than DW. Though at some point all the icons in that journal got some weird Photobucket logo over them because I think Photobucket had changed its rules, so they didn't seem very usable anymore - I've got a bunch I saved earlier - but I just checked and it seems like you can still get them without the logo if you open it in a new tab.

Despite the threat of rain I managed to get out in the garden for a couple of hours, working in a different spot though, abandoning the ivy in favour of doing battle with the forsythia. It's so tall it's a menace, and there's overgrown hedge behind it somewhere, along with holly and a cotoneaster that also needs cutting back. Oh, and brambles too. Lots of brambles. *sigh*

April 12th - 944 words, a double drabble, some Doctor Who drabbles and I finally finished and posted the challenge fic I started on Wednesday. Yay!

You seem to manage to get in a lot of gardening now, that's great! Sounds like you're doing a valiant battle with those plants which seek to overtake their neighbours! :-D

Well done on finishing the challenge fic, and yay drabbles! I wish I was better at limiting stories to 100 words, that'd be a neat way to explore ideas without committing to a few thousand words!

I used to be sure I could ever write drabbles because I'm a bit wordy, and sometimes my attempts still take off ad end up several thousand words long, but I've practiced a lot and if I really have to, as with the Doctor Who drabbles, I can keep it short and manage to edit down to exactly 100 words. But if double drabbles are allowed, everything ends up 200 words. I need to be stricter with myself...

I don't change my icons very often. It took me about five years to change my default icon on LJ the first time, and in the following ten, I probably changed it again only twice. This DW account has 9 years and I changed it only once so far. I am a creature of habit :D

I do like to usually keep the same icon for a fairly long time, but for me it does tend to change more often - I think the same default icon is often likely to stay from half a year to year. At some point I start feeling like I've "grown out of" whatever reason made me choose the icon and start feeling I need a change. But I do hope I'll be happy with this one for some time, because it's cute and I feel it suits me.

I love how many WED people do at least some longhand writing - when I joined up months ago I thought I was some sort of dinosaur.

I beat the scene! Or well... it's good enough for now. There are a couple of points it doesn't cover that I might need it to cover but I think it's loads better than it was. At least 450 new words but then I got into pulling old bits in and adding sentences and... can't word count those.

I like this linear forward progress thing. Only a few more scenes to go where I have a definite sense of what goes where and then I'll be debating whether I need connecting scenes or a time skip (or both) and whether both POVs are balanced, etc. When I get to that point I bet you I'll end up writing things all out of order again.

Hee, I know what you mean about feeling like a dinosaur with longhand writing. For me it goes in phases - sometimes I don't write much by hand for a couple of months, sometimes I do it all the time. I think this month I've been inspired by those of you who also do it, it has reminded me how good longhand writing has been for me in the past, and so I was inspired to do more of it again. :-)

Yay for beating the scene well enough! And good enough that you can move on is better than aiming for perfect and never getting past it.

I do find hand writing a good way to get moving if I'm stuck. I seem to do better that way than on the computer.

Wrote part of birthday fic and managed 1291 words which is less than I wanted on a day I wanted to dedicate to writing

Yeah, it particularly helps me in getting unstuck, too. Maybe it's because I'm doing something different, and I just think there's a part of my brain that connects better with handwriting. If it wasn't so much work to type it up, I'd handwrite even more than I do.

Well, it sounds like plenty of writing anyway, though I understand wanting to get yet more of it done. But in any case well done for writing that much!
