Write Every Day, June Day #30

So here we are, the last day of the month! Tomorrow, I'll still post the final tally, but then we continue the challenge in July over at carenejeans's journal. So head over there if you want to keep checking in to write every day. (Or however many days you happen to write on.)

Just asking again: is there someone who'd already like to volunteer to host for August? We don't have anyone hosting that month yet, and in summer, it would be nice to have things settled down a bit in advance. I know I can't do August, as I'll be traveling for some of that (plus I just did June, obviously).

Today's Writing

I went on another research trip! Same place, but didn't stay quite as long this time, so I was less knackered. Though it was warm today, and the sun was shining when I did the outdoors part, so I did feel a bit overheated, despite making sure I didn't spend much time out in the middle of the day. (And my honesty feels compelled to add that it was 22 °C. Yes, I'm aware that some people's homes are warmer than that. I'm aware that all you people of warmer climates are now laughing at me. I'm a wimp with warmth, I can't help it. I didn't choose it, my body did, and the dizziness is real. But I didn't get a sunstroke, yay.)

Anyway, lots of notes were written - also before I went, because I spent some of the morning reading a research book - but I didn't have a lot of energy for fiction-writing. I also lost most of the evening with a book. Anyway, I did finish the edits to and posted the one fic I managed to complete for the Cottoncandy Bingo. I hope I'll get some of those I've started written later on, even if it's too late to manage a bingo for this month. Anyway, I then managed to get myself to work on my who_contest story, so I still have a chance of making that. I happened to get a word count of exactly 300 words altogether, a nice round number for day #30!

Evenings are NEVER "lost" to a book--they're just relocated to a better and more interesting plane of existence--lol! Seriously, though, I know what you mean. I was that way this morning, reading well past my usual cut-off time. I just didn't want to go about my day.

Let's see...I finished the editing on the first chapter, which included adding probably 500-1000 words. Keeping track is difficult because I'm also cutting out parts and moving them into a separate doc, since I'll be using those scenes later on.

I feel a lot better about the whole novel now, though. There was some important exposition that needed to be established in this chapter, which began its life as a short story, where I'd short-handed some world-building stuff. In a shorter format, I could get away with that, but in a novel, not so much. Anyway, I feel the narrator/protagonist is MUCH stronger now, and I think I've demonstrated some important plot elements without doing an info-dump. Readers may have a different opinion, however. That's what editors are for. ;-)

I did say "lost" rather than "wasted". It's just, sometimes you're like "wait, how did two hours go by?" But it was one of the October Daye books, so certainly it was not a waste. :-D And I think you're entitled to some lazy reading mornings on your summer holidays!

Well done with the editing! Yeah, I can never keep track of all words changed in editing, either. I sometimes change a lot, so usually I just see if there's any added word count, and if I know I've both removed and written lots of new things, I try to locate the main new paragraphs and sentences and get a general word count out of them, and just stick that into my spreadsheet as a guesstimate. Glad you're feeling better about the novel after getting started with the editing! And yes, editors are for telling you what still needs changed for the thing to work after you've done your part in editing. You can't see everything about your own text, after all.
