Write Every Day - April Day #7

Today's Writing
I had this moment of epiphany and motivation today which I'm too tired to describe now, but... it made me write. Look, it made me start my novel. For real. I started writing the first scenes and steadily wrote over 2,500 words (in Finnish, which is probably equivalent to about 3,000 in English). I loved it so much. It will surely need much editing, of course - I have a tendency to write too much which needs to be cut out, but hey, that's first drafts for you, and the main thing is I'm writing it and it feels so awesome.

Date: 2018-04-07 10:37 pm (UTC)I am kicking at the structure of Stagecraft. It might be a trilogy; fml.
...here's the thing though:
Stagecraft is the story of Melissa's spiritual journey.
Stagecraft is also the narrative of a good decade of British Isles politics in this gaslamp fantasy world, with special highlight to how the changing political landscape affects the marginalized people of the Isles.
How do I do both without making it seem like either serves the other?

Date: 2018-04-08 08:11 pm (UTC)Ooh, structures can be tricky, especially if you're balancing two very different storylines. I like having both an individual storyline and a community/society storyline, but I can imagine it's not that easy to figure out how to write both equally well. Good luck figuring that out! Do the narratives interact and influence each other a lot?

Date: 2018-04-08 08:35 pm (UTC)The other thing is, if it's a trilogy, then it makes sense that one volume focuses on Melissa. One on Ciara, and one on Daphne. (Not necessarily in that order.) But you've still got the politics on all levels from intrafamilial straight up to international...

Date: 2018-04-07 10:45 pm (UTC)I wrote another 1003 words on "The Donner Party" today, accidentally copying yesterday's word count. As I'm still on break, my daily goal is 1000, and anything over that, even if it's just a few words, is especially sweet. Monday it's back to school for the last eight-week push before exams, but I'm okay with the return to the routine, even if it means my word quota drops again to 500/day (except on weekends). Anyway, that's a lot of words just to say that I'm happy with today's goal.
Congrats again, my friend! Go you! :-)

Date: 2018-04-08 08:25 pm (UTC)Yay for reaching your goal, that sounds great! It makes sense to lower your word count goal for when you're busy. I'm still thinking about whether to set a goal for my novel or not, and how high to set it. But I don't think I'll need it yet, I'll see how it goes for a while. :-)

Date: 2018-04-08 02:00 am (UTC)I wasn't feeling well today, but it got better around midnight, and I ended up adding another scene to my drawerfic after all.

Date: 2018-04-08 08:25 pm (UTC)I'm sorry you weren't feeling well! Glad you got better in the end and managed to write some after all. :-)

Date: 2018-04-08 09:15 am (UTC)I actually wrote almost 1000 words of Star Wars fanfic yesterday! It will contain meaningful disaster relief work and trope-subverted robots-make-them-do-it. Hopefully not too weird a mix...

Date: 2018-04-08 08:26 pm (UTC)Ooh, that's a nice bit of fanfic-writing! And that sounds like an interesting combo - I like it when stories feature something that may not be the most usual mix of themes/tropes. :-)

Date: 2018-04-08 12:08 pm (UTC)Jossing my chapter yesterday actually meant I had a lot to work on today, so I put away 1200 words on that.
I have big horrible dentistry planned for tomorrow, so I will probably take a hiatus for that. (First I will be in a fear coma, and then hopefully I will be drunk.)

Date: 2018-04-08 08:31 pm (UTC)Sounds like you made a lot of progress with your story and the changes you need to do, that's great!
Ooh, my sympathies for the horrible dentistry! Hope it's not too bad and you feel better as soon after that as possible. But planning for a hiatus in advance is probably a good idea, so you don't strain yourself trying to do more than you can - then if you do feel like writing after all, that's an extra bonus, but no problem if you don't because you didn't expect to. :-)

Date: 2018-04-08 04:24 pm (UTC)I worked on the nonfiction project. I belatedly (sheesh) realized it would help a lot to put it in Scrivener, so started moving stuff, and wrote some project notes and outline-ish bits.
