(no subject)

I just listened to the second-to-last episode of the Wolf 359 Season 3 tonight.

Well, that was not restful.

*cuddles self*

(I'm not saying anything more spoilery than this in the post, but if someone comments, there might be spoilery discussions. Just saying.)

Well, I rather could tell it wouldn't be restful, but the whole second half of the season has been so tense, I just wanted to get on with it. I have a feeling I'll have to listen to the last episode pretty soon, for the same purpose.

(Why do I always do this to myself? Get into fandoms that really get under my skin? Well, I suppose it's hard to get obsessive about things I don't care intensely about.)

ETA: And now I also listened to the season finale, and oh, my... It wasn't exactly cheerful either, but it also rather changes certain things - and makes the thing I was the most upset about less dire - but the last few episodes were a hell of an emotional ride altogether. As much as I'm going WTF and want to find out what's going on, I'll need some time to recover before I go onto the final season.

Write Every Day: Final tally for April 2020!

Here's the final tally for Write Every Day in April. Thank you so much to everyone who participated! I had a good time hosting and having this travelling writing show camp at my journal this month. It was really helpful in this time of uncertainty and social distancing to have a constant stream of interaction about writing. I hope this was useful to you all as well!

In May we'll be hosted by [personal profile] nafs, so head over there if you want to keep participating! Hope I'll see many of you over there. Also, [personal profile] ysilme has a list of past hosts and those who've currently promised to host future months over in this entry at [personal profile] zwei_hexen - it's not binding, just a log of what offers have been made so they're easier to find.

If you subscribed to me this month for the Write Every Day posts, you can feel free to either unsubscribe or not, whichever you prefer. I won't take it personally if you unsubscribe when the month is over, I promise, but it's also perfectly fine if you want to keep on reading. I still need to properly go through who's subscribing to me these days and who's granted access as well and all that, so, I'll get there, I hope... Anyway, I hope to keep seeing you around, and I wish you all a good writing month in May!

And if you didn't have time to check in yet for yesterday or any other day, or if I missed you on the tally, let me know!

Fannish character meme

A meme grabbed from [personal profile] kindkit, because I want to be social about something and this seems like a good way. And also because I haven't done a fandom meme in a while and this looks like fun.

Give me a character and I'll tell you some things:

1. How I feel about this character

2. All the people I ship romantically and/or sexually with this character

3. Favorite gen relationship(s) for this character

4. My unpopular opinion about this character

5. One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

6. Random pet theory about this character that you won't convince me is not true.

7. A song or piece of music I associate with this character.

Feel free to pick any fandom that you know I like. If you're not sure if I know/like something, try it and I'll tell you if I don't know the fandom/character enough to have these opinions. Just one caveat: if you pick Doctor Who, I've still got very conflicted feelings about the Chibnall era thanks to the S12 finale, so please be a sweetheart and don't pick the characters from that era. Anything else goes, old and new.

My AO3 account - not only my own works but also my bookmarks etc. - can provide you some ideas as to which fandoms I've been into in the recent years, if you have trouble remembering.

Write Every Day, April Day #30

Here's the final check-in post for April, though I'll still post the complete tally tomorrow. But already at this point, thank you very much to everyone who's participated! It's been good to have such a writing community camp at my journal this month. I'm too sleepy to write more right now - I'm posting this later than usual, because I've been distracting myself from the fact that tomorrow's May 1st and, that being a big holiday in Finland, I would normally spend all day hanging out with my friends eating things and chatting and so on, but well, in this situation I will not be. (By distracting myself I mean baking and watching a musical DVD. Just for the record.)

Today's Writing

I had got an idea for a scene in the novel and started writing it in my notebook. Got a few pages. I'd have loved to write more, but my eyes have been sore tonight from too much time staring at screens, so I didn't feel it was a good idea to work on anything that needed the computer. But I was happy with the scene idea I had and the progress I made with it, so that's good.

Write Every Day, April Day #29

It's been a busy day and I actually have a time when I need to get up tomorrow morning, so this'll be brief.

Today's Writing

I added sentences to a ficlet. I'm still hoping to finish things for my April [community profile] allbingo card before April's over, but we'll see how that turns out.

Write Every Day, April Day #28

Looks like [personal profile] nafs will be hosting, and had volunteered already a few months ago, but I didn't know/remember, and of course with everything that's been going on, it's best to make sure anyway. It might be practical if we could come up with a way to keep a centralized list about who's offered to host when... I suppose it could just be a linked/pinned entry in someone's journal, or some other simple thing.

But anyway, unless there's a last-moment change, May should be in [personal profile] nafs's journal. But we've still got a few more April days left!

Today's Writing

I did some more writing on the novel by longhand, and it was good. I meant to also do some more typing up of bits already written, but I don't think I did... Honestly, it's sometimes hard to remember what I did today and what I did yesterday because the routines of the days are very similar.

Write Every Day, April Day #27

Are there any volunteers to host this challenge in May? I asked a couple of days ago and I'm asking again now. [personal profile] falkner has tentatively offered to host if there are no other takers, but if someone else is willing and able to host, please let us know!

Today's Writing

In the early part of the day, I added some sentences to yesterday's fanfic, and I typed up more of the novel scene, editing some parts in the process. Now in the evening I did a bit more novel-writing, a little under a page longhand. It feels like I currently often think better with pen in hand.

Write Every Day, April Day #26

Today's Writing

Not as much as I hoped, but I've been quite tired and listless today. I wrote a bit on the novel, and spent some time typing up things I'd written in my notebook for it. Didn't finish transcribing the whole scene, but at least I'm further along than I was before.

Just now I started a ficlet for one of the bingo cards, wrote 135 words in it and then my brain decided to freeze mid-sentence, so I guess I'm calling it a night.

Write Every Day, April Day #25

Since it's less than a week until the end of April, I thought it might be prudent to start looking for the next month's host before it's time for this travelling writing caravan to migrate to another journal. So, anyone around who'd be willing to host us in May? If you've never done it before, no stress. The main thing is to get the check-in post up every day, update the tally, and hopefully reply to the participants' comments and maybe cheer them on and so forth. Anything else is optional. Especially in the recent months the hosts have often included writing-related comments, questions, quotes etc. and that's been great, but it's entirely voluntary, so no need to worry if you don't think you can do that.

Anyway, if you'd like to try hosting us for the month of May, comment here or in another check-in post and let me know! And if you'd like to host another month that's not May, you can let us know that, too - it's extra nice to sometimes get the hosting sorted out for a few months in advance!

Today's Writing

I did some freewriting first, and wrote a bunch of notes for the Ambush Project #2. I'll really need to give it a better proxy title for referring to it here. I also unearthed some unused or little-used notebooks from my drawers and assorted other places, and took some time to figure out which I might use for the notes of which project.

I meant to work on my novel as well, but that doesn't seem to have happened. I did think about it, though, so there's been some work in my head...

Write Every Day, April Day #24

Thank goodness it's Friday... I'm in need of my weekend rest. This week has somehow felt a lot longer than it is, and I feel like I've done a lot more than I really have. But the things I've been doing have been things that exhaust me easily, so I guess it's that. No particularly interesting writerly commentary tonight, am too tired...

Today's Writing

I tried to work on fics, but I only managed a couple of short sentences. Then I freewrote by hand, first just general what's-on-my-mind freewriting, then some thoughts about what I'd like to do with the novel. I was thinking of doing a bit of sort-of-research reading, but not tonight, I don't think..

Write Every Day, April Day #23

Today's Writing

Today's writing has just been kind of patchwork for me. I wrote down a whole bunch of fic ideas for the prompts from various bingo cards; I added a few sentences to a couple of ficlet drafts for the [community profile] femslashficlets prompt table, and realized one of those ficlets is actually a complete first draft and put it in the folder for complete drafts. And I started a ficlet for the current weekly prompt, writing 70 words so far. Too sleepy to continue, but it's a start, and I've still got a few days left to finish it, and it probably won't be a long one, even by the standards of that community.

I should probably seek out some betas, since I have ficlets that I could edit and publish soon. Of course, I'm only managing to write in my tiny micro fandoms...

Write Every Day, April Day #22

We're gone full three weeks into April and are beginning a fourth. I don't know how much of a feel for the passage of time I'd even have without this hosting, really, because of the whole *gestures at everything* situation.

Today's Writing

I dabbled some with my novel, zero-drafting a scene. Not a lot of writing, but some. I also played around with the character sheets for Ambush Project #2, but it was really more just fiddling with the wording of the templates than adding much to the sheet. I meant to do more writing later, but I had mental exhaustion set in and ended up not doing that. I did finish watching the second episode of Gentleman Jack, which was good remedy for the mental exhaustion. I've got the end credits song stuck in my head now...

Write Every Day, April Day #21 (and rec your stuff!)

I've been meaning to do this for a while, but I've either forgotten or been so tired I haven't had the energy. But, this year the previous hosts of Write Every Day have had this new idea that I'm going to continue. So, if you want, rec something you've written in the comments to this post!

And if you didn't happen to write today but want to rec, you can just comment on the post anyway to rec your writing (maybe specifically mention that you're not checking in for the day, just so it's clear).

I haven't managed to do this yet, but I'll try now that I'm hosting it. I'm going to post mine in the comments. At the moment I'm trying to read through my old fics to find something I can rec - the problem is that I keep wanting to edit the already posted works and finding they're not as good as they were in my head... Trying to find something that doesn't make me lose faith in my writing... (I try to remember that I am writing fanfic in a language that isn't my own, and that actually can be something of an extra challenge.)

Today's Writing

I was exhausted by some RL stuff, so I let myself just do the word equivalent of doodling: I added character sheets for a few characters into my Scrivener project for Ambush Project #2, and wrote bits and pieces about the characters there. It's useful both for getting ideas down, and seeing what I still need. But I got a bit distracted trying to decide which pictures would best represent my characters (I saved a bunch when I first brainstormed it). And then I got even more distracted by inherent sexism in my language, gah. People tend to imagine Finnish is very gender-neutral because we don't have gendered pronouns (or gendered nouns, adjectives etc.) but we do have a ton of job names and titles that are inherently masculine, and they can be a pain. Some of them are easy to change into gender-neutral versions, but some are decidedly not. You can't just insert the word for "person" or "woman" where the original word has "man" because the expression only has the meaning in its original form, and people get totally different connotations when you change the word. Gaaaah.

Basically I don't know what to call one character's job title because it's one of those words and I can't find a workaround that's any use. Maybe I have to brainstorm with some local writerly friends... (And no, the society hasn't tried to find a gender-neutral version of the title yet either, as far as I'm aware.)

Write Every Day, April Day #20

I'm slowly trying to edge my way towards an earlier posting time, so I'll get around to going to bed earlier as well. Today I'm all of five minutes earlier than yesterday!

Today's Writing

I took some time during the day to work on my novel a bit. I continued writing a chapter I'd started last week. I'm not sure how happy I'm with the voice in it, but well, I'll be feeling it out, I guess! Plus, it's always easier to edit something that has been written than something not written.

I had thoughts about writing more on the characters and plot of Ambush Project #2, but I never managed to make time for it. I did think about it, though, so maybe I'll get to set those thoughts down on another day.

Write Every Day, April Day #19

I actually managed to somewhat start tidying up my home today. Not a lot, but some. At this rate I might have a nice-looking home by 2030? But hey, it's a start.

Today's Writing

More worldbuilding today, this time for Ambush Project #2. Wrote down lots of stuff, it was really interesting. I've been in a bit of a daze most of the day, this kind of thing isn't really conductive to being well-organized about the rest of my life!

In the evening I also took a look at my bingo prompts again, wrote down a few ideas - and I ended up actually starting that story that I wrote down the fandom and prompt for yesterday. Didn't get far, though, because I'm getting tired. Then again, I did also spend a lot of words on a non-WED post about fannish things, so even if that's not what I typically count for writing (because I want to make sure I somehow work on my creative stuff), but it did take its time.

Culture consumed, isolation edition (quite rambly)

Okay, I've been meaning to manage these "culture consumed" posts for a while. Seriously, I'm probably just going to have to go back to trying to do a Reading Wednesday and then pick other days for doing other forms of culture because I apparently find it too much work to list them all at once. And then I delay for weeks and then it especially is too much work. But I just want to chatter about culture things so now I'm doing it.

Books

This is going to be fast, because I'm not managing to read much now. Pretty much ever since the whole global-pandemic-with-lockdowns-and-social-distancing thing started, my concentration has been really bad for reading. I don't know why. Normally reading is my way of escaping from bad stuff, of comforting myself when things are hard, but now I mostly can't. It's not like I can't focus on anything at all, either, but somehow reading isn't working, or only works for small amounts of time. When I try to read for a long time, or when I'm too anxious, I can't focus, or I just get so tense it's awful. I'm really envious of everyone who can keep reading through this because I miss that.

This is to say that since I last posted about books, the only books I've managed to finish are T. Kingfisher's The Raven and the Reindeer and a re-read of Martha Wells's second Murderbot novella, the latter because I figured rereads might work better. The evidence about that is inconclusive, because it's a 150-page novella, and I took at least a week to read it. Pretty sure that the first time around I read through it in a day, and I had high fever then. But I did generally enjoy it, in the small bits I managed to read it in. However, there was maybe a bit too much, uh, murdering going on for my current state of mind. Maybe the next reread should be a Becky Chambers or Red, White, and Royal Blue. But now I've started reading a Finnish YA fantasy novel by one of the only current Finnish authors that I love just as much as my favourite foreign ones (Siiri Enoranta). I really like it, and it's in my own language, so I'm hoping that makes it easier to read.

To go back to The Raven and the Reindeer for a bit, it's a feminist f/f retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen, and I enjoyed a lot. I mean, it's a feminist f/f retelling of The Snow Queen, so we're doing pretty well already, and it had awesome animals, like a proper smart-ass raven and reindeer some magical flying otters. But I got inordinately distracted by the fact that there were a lot of hints she was setting it in the Finnish culture, or a Finnish-based one - references to uniquely Finnish folklore and myths, especially - but wasn't aware that in Finnish, we don't have gendered third-person pronouns. Whether someone is "he" or "she" is not a conversation you can have in Finnish. (Of course you can otherwise have conversations about whether someone or something is male or female, but they wouldn't rise out of conversations that the he-or-she question would rise out of. Also, it seems weird, if we assume they're speaking/thinking in Finnish, that a raven would not like being called "it" because "it" is a totally proper pronoun to use of animals even if we think of them as intelligent and personable, for example with pets, and it wouldn't feel particularly demeaning/objectifying. In fact, in colloquial speech we use that pronoun for humans as well, because, huh, I don't know, we just do. I tend to always feel I'm being particularly official or excessively "proper" if I even use our word for he/she about a person in conversation. But I don't know if this was the case in the sort of time the story seems set in.)

Sorry, that's a long aside, and probably would literally only bother Finnish readers like me, but it just made me really confused about where I was supposed to locate this mentally, because every now and then it was telling me to locate it in my country, but then it also was clear Gerda was thinking in a language that doesn't match with the culture. Also Gerda isn't a Finnish name, but we do have plenty of Swedish names in use so that's not as much of a problem. As for Kay, though, that's not how we spell that name. But the names probably just come from the English renditions of the original tale.

Uh, I've been waiting to get that off my chest for a couple of weeks, thank you for reading this chapter and we'll move on now.

Podcasts

While I can't focus on books, you know what I can focus on? Podcasts! So many podcasts! In a time when I can't really meet anyone in person other than the occasional grocery store worker or a neighbour I pass by at the yard from a proper distance, it feels comforting to have some voices accompanying me, I guess. I've especially dived maybe even deeper into my podcast drama obsession, so I seriously need to trim this to just the main things. So I'll do those.

So, uh, maybe a month ago I started listening to Wolf 359. Rambling for a few paragraphs, mostly not spoilery but a bit. I've listened until the mid-season Three. )

So anyway, I've got a new fannish obsession there and it's... quite something.

Out of my pre-existing podcast obsessions, I've been slowly going through Season Two of The Penumbra Podcast, and it seems like I finally got through one really rough phase of the Juno Steel storyline (I'm sure there are still other rough things to come, but at least one arc arrived to a conclusion) and I was rewarded by a more hopeful, and truly excellent tale in Juno Steel and the Time Gone By. While there still was dark stuff in it, too, there also were some lovely things, and let's just say that I've now got a new f/f ship that I adore madly already. I might have to really write a separate entry about this, because I have lots of feelings and maybe even thinky thoughts. We'll see if I managed that!

And still with The Penumbra, today I listened to the Second Citadel story The Moonlit Hermit, both parts, because it was just so good and I couldn't stop. I love Rilla so damn much. I could honestly just listen to Rilla's research logs for ten hours, I wouldn't even need a plot, though I also enjoyed the plot and the character interactions immensely. But Rilla is brilliant.

You know, I'd rather love for all these scientist ladies from different podcasts to get together and solve some sort of a problem. I could just imagine Rilla, Violet Liu from The Strange Case of the Starship Iris, Dr. Eurys from Tides and Nora from The 12:37 getting together and being really amazing at sciencing at a problem. (Though Nora would probably be pretty unsettled since she doesn't do so great without her normal circumstances. But Rilla's good at dealing with Damien's anxiety, so she'd probably be help there, too.)

In terms of re-listening to old favorites, I've recently listened to S1 of We Fix Space Junk for the second time, and had even more fun than the first time. I've moved to re-listening to S2 of The Far Meridian, though I'm still in the early episodes - this part is a bit heavy listening, so it isn't the best time in the world for it, and I'm taking it slowly. And... I finally started re-listening to The Strange Case of the Starship Iris, and oh my goodness it's so good it's so good. I'm loving it even more this time around, maybe because now I already know everyone and I know what's generally going on and can just get more into it. I remember the first time I took a while to warm up to Arkady, but well, now I know how much I adore her, so I don't mind her being, oh, well, her general Arkady-ness. *waves* I've already listened to the first two episodes today, and I have a feeling I'll be going through it pretty fast this time around.

As I said, I've listened to plenty more podcasts, but I guess this covers the main things that I'm the most obsessed with.

TV Shows

Recently I got an HBO subscription for a bit - I'm still in the free trial period, but since I'm not a very fast watcher, it probably won't be enough. I'd been wanting to watch His Dark Materials and Gentleman Jack, and I've now watched the first episodes of both.

His Dark Materials is really excellently made and exciting and beautiful and seems to be superbly cast so far. But I remember the books pretty well, especially the first one because I read it many times while waiting for the sequels as a wee geeky girl-child, and well, now I'm watching it with this dreadful sense of foreboding because I know what's coming up, and it's especially bad with all the child characters because I know some bad things are coming and... I'm not sure if I can actually watch something like this at this time period. But at the same time it's so beautiful and well-made and it has beautiful music.

Gentleman Jack, though, is a delight, and doesn't give me the same difficult feelings. I have a feeling it won't take me long to watch it, the first episode was already so, so good. Of course there's complicated stuff that doesn't feel good, because history is history and the English class system is the English class system and yeah, that would be a whole essay. But it's more usual stuff that is easier to deal with than more epic danger. I'm going to have to write more about it when I've watched more of it. But it's really, really good.

And now I really have to stop and get on with other stuff before it's midnight in my time zone again.

Write Every Day, April Day #18

At some point I will figure out my time management enough to post these check-in posts earlier than just before my clock hits midnight!

Today's Writing

Today was rather exciting writing-wise - while I didn't write any new manuscript words, I did a lot of worldbuilding and plotting for the Ambush Project in its notebook, and more in my head. I think I may have figured out The Thing. You know, The Thing that the plot is about, which I've been writing around for months now. This is very exciting. I hope it still feels like a good idea in the coming days. The idea just came to me in the aftermath of some podcast-listening, while I was crocheting away and letting my mind wander, and then I started getting a ton of stuff about both the world and the plot and how the characters' story will progress from the parts that I had figured out earlier, and all that sort of stuff. I wrote down a bunch of things, and then I went for a walk and brainstormed a lot more.

I also got a bunch of worldbuilding ideas for Ambush Project #2, and some related plot and character ideas. I didn't end up writing down anything for it yet, though I meant to, but I did think about it a fair bit. I hope tomorrow I get myself to write some things down, because writing down ideas usually helps me generate more and get deeper into them.

I did try to start a fic for the Trope Bingo, but I only got as far as writing the fandom and the trope in the title of the document, so that doesn't really count as writing it. But I thought about it!

Write Every Day, April Day #17

We're actually in the second half of April now. To be honest, I have trouble with feeling any sort of scale in the passage of time. It's also five weeks exactly since the whole isolation / social distancing thing began in Finland. Which is probably why time scales are hard. Anyway, I don't know who else needs to hear/read this tonight, but: whatever you're feeling in these times, and I mean whatever, it's okay to feel it. Let yourself feel it and ask yourself what you need and be good to yourself a bit. Or more than a bit. Anyway, that's all. If you want some lovely links and things, [personal profile] elisi has some, See this post for nice things.

Anyway, on with the travelling writing show.

Today's Writing

I took a break in the afternoon from Stuff I Needed To Do and spent some of that time scribbling down ideas for my Ambush Project #2. That was fun. I love the brainstorming and imagining phase.

In the evening, I looked at my bingo cards a bit, then went to my [community profile] femslashficlets prompt table (queer women's lit quotes) and looked at the one completed ficlet I had there and edited through it the best I could. Tomorrow I'll decide whether I should try to get a beta, or just boldly post it without.

I also looked at the other prompts, made some new notes about ships I could write stories for (more specifically one new ship, courtesy of my podcast listening last night), and then I started to find one. I didn't get very far because it made me feel more things than I had the energy for, but it was a start.

Write Every Day, April Day #16

Today's Writing

I only got around to a tiny bit of freewriting earlier in the day, because of other stuff, and in the evening I was tired and kind of meh, and it took until pretty late to get to writing. But eventually I did manage several paragraphs of the novel; one of those that I'm completely rewriting from the first version. I'm pretty proud of having managed more than an alibi sentence or two, because it was one of those days.

Write Every Day, April Day #15

Voluntary writing question of the day: Do you track words counts or do you have other ways of tracking/measuring your writing progress, besides checking in here? I didn't use to do anything like that, unless I was doing NaNoWriMo and wanted to beat a specific goal. Then for a couple of years at least, I did track my word counts and have yearly goals, inspired my some communities here on DW. But I abandoned it this year, because it didn't feel like a meaningful way for me to follow my progress, especially when I sometimes handwrite a lot (making it hard to get a precise count) and also write in two languages that have very different structures, making the word count comparisons less meaningful. But now that I'm only following my daily writing, I sometimes miss being able to mark in a list when I've had a particularly productive day or something. Ah well, I can probably live with it. But thinking about that made me curious about how you folks approach these things.

I do have some tiny rewards for myself for whenever I reach certain word count milestones with the new version of my novel, but I haven't yet reached any of them. Maybe I should just add more tiny rewards for other things as well! Like for an X number of fanfic words, for published fics, for fics in new fandoms, for getting so-and-so far in a notebook... But I'd have to think of how to come up with enough rewards since I don't have a lot of money these days.

On with the show!

Today's Writing

Though I had actual scheduled programme in the morning, I woke up early enough that I had some time for writing after breakfast. I did more free-writing that turned into more brainstorming for Ambush Project #2 (it needs a snappier pseudonym). And in the evening I finally got started on one of my bingo cards - I wrote 499 words on one of the squares on the April Bingo Card. Pure fluff, but that's what I need now. It still needs at least a few hundred words to be complete, but I was pleased with my progress anyway.
