Write Every Day, April Day #25

Since it's less than a week until the end of April, I thought it might be prudent to start looking for the next month's host before it's time for this travelling writing caravan to migrate to another journal. So, anyone around who'd be willing to host us in May? If you've never done it before, no stress. The main thing is to get the check-in post up every day, update the tally, and hopefully reply to the participants' comments and maybe cheer them on and so forth. Anything else is optional. Especially in the recent months the hosts have often included writing-related comments, questions, quotes etc. and that's been great, but it's entirely voluntary, so no need to worry if you don't think you can do that.

Anyway, if you'd like to try hosting us for the month of May, comment here or in another check-in post and let me know! And if you'd like to host another month that's not May, you can let us know that, too - it's extra nice to sometimes get the hosting sorted out for a few months in advance!

Today's Writing

I did some freewriting first, and wrote a bunch of notes for the Ambush Project #2. I'll really need to give it a better proxy title for referring to it here. I also unearthed some unused or little-used notebooks from my drawers and assorted other places, and took some time to figure out which I might use for the notes of which project.

I meant to work on my novel as well, but that doesn't seem to have happened. I did think about it, though, so there's been some work in my head...

This morning there were pigeon feathers all over the lawn. Not sure whether the pigeon got away or ended up as a fox's dinner but I've never seen so many feathers.

Found my third mysterious hole, another small one, maybe an inch and a half across. Wonder how many more will appear as I clear the ivy...

April 25th - 1000 words on a challenge fic with a 1000 word limit. First draft was longer so I had to do a lot of editing to get it down to an acceptable length.

Sounds like there's been some animal drama in your garden, yikes! There's a teeny tiny grove near my home and sometimes you also see a bunch of feathers on the ground and wonder if someone got eaten or just had a scare...

That sounds very interesting! I was going to suggest moles or mice, but their holes might be smaller? I'm afraid I don't know, really - and anyway you probably have a slightly different set of animals where you live than we have here.

Yay for getting your fic down to the exact word limit! I'm not very good at maximum word limits, but on the other hand they force my creativity more because I have to think of which words are essential and which I can discard. So I should probably really do more of those...

I want to know how I slept trough it. I'm a light sleeper. Foxes are stealthy but I'd think the pigeon would have kicked up a fuss.

I'm thinking maybe wood mice because I know we have those in the garden. I need to research hedgehogs too, see if they burrow...

Thanks! It does make you really look hard at each word, deciding what can be left out. Sometimes changing tense can help too.

Today, I added 699 words to Bond/Q and will finish it tomorrow. As I commented elsewhere, I'm a little hesitant to be done with this story. It's been a constant throughout the COVID-19 crisis, and it feels like a little too much to have to start something new and unknown. Still, I *want* to edit and post this story (which crossed the 40K line tonight), so I guess I'll just do that.

I understand having mixed feelings about finishing the story when it's been something steady in this time of anxiety. *hugs* I'm sure you'll come up with something that will soon feel like a comforting constant as well, even if it's hard to start a new thing right now. And anyway, you can always spend lots of time editing it if you're unsure about letting it go, like I do. :-D Anyway, best of luck both with the editing and with finding something new that feels right! ♥

I have written multiple sentences of story and also the sign-up for a fanfic exchange. (Though not, yet, my letter.)

Yay for sentences and sign-up! I haven't done sign-ups for a few months, though there's an exchange I'm very seriously eyeing now (currently in the nominations stage).

turingfest, an exchange for AI, robot, android, cyborg etc. characters. I've done it once before, and I'd like to do it again because I've only got more interested in all that stuff since then. The main issue is that most of the fandoms I'm considering for it kind of need a reread before I'll have the confidence to write them. Will have to see what I have the time for before the sign-ups end.

I joined my friends in an online co-writing session this afternoon and churned out about 550 words in an hour. Whoo hoo!

We're definitely doing this again, this is the most productive I've been in ages.

Day 25: 124 words

Not as many as I wanted, but a bit more than the alibi sentence I'd resigned myself to

That's definitely more than an alibi sentence (unless it's a very long sentence, heh!). That's one of the powers of alibi sentences - once you set yourself down to write at least that, it may wake up some of your creativity and make you write more sentences!

Worked a little bit on two stories (editing + a hundred words or so), then added 1200 words to another.

It wasn't a bad writing day. I got 975 words on the original novel (yay) and 465 words on the long Prodigal Son story

Sympathies, my neck and shoulders definitely do that sometimes. Especially since I spend a lot of time at the computer for other reasons, too. Sometimes it's just necessary to take a break from the computer. Hope you got them sorted out!

Day 25 - 300ish words on a couple of different things, the play piece from several days ago, and a sort of related piece.

About 100 words of meta for me for yesterday, plus some pondering plot and character choices, but without writing down anything of them.

The thought work is important, too, even when you don't write it down! I definitely need to spend time just ruminating on thoughts and ideas without setting things down on paper or screen yet.

Checking in for days 23, 24, and 25. All of them made words in one way or another, and 25 is a cheer for having a draft done that can be sent out for beta and revision and making better.
